OK, I got an electronic shipment late yesterday, rush, from PA. There was special packing tape seal on top with the important warnings:

DO NOT DROP! FRAGILE! KEEP DRY!

Understand that the contents were about the size of a well-boxed external hard drive or older desktop modem ...
and that there was a packing slip, too. A LARGE packing slip, if I may say so -- in fact, the packing slip entirely covered, not to say obscured, the important warnings ... sigh. The contents arrived OK anyhow.

Always expect a train and other stories: here's a lucky fellow -- please don't try this at home:

Worldcon party plans for FoL continue -- more as details emerge. If you expect to be at RenoVation and will have a car available for sight-seeing or supply pick-up, be sure to let us know as the time come closer.

More on the always expect a train theme:

Truck hits train and  "The driver was cited for failing to use due care by NHP. "

http://www.mynews4.com/story.php?id=27853&n=122

This was the first report I saw,. I note that the report is pretty bareboned; but I gather from the location that the train in question was a California Zephyr ... but I looked for more and found:

http://www.masslive.com/newsflash/index.ssf/story/accident-involves-amtrak-train-in-churchill-county/3f9c5ebcdff84188ae1d2217e1f07c64

My understanding is that this was the westbound California Zephyr due to arrive in Reno at 8:30 yesterday morning and it was struck by a southbound semi -- which, looking at the road and track configuration there -- had been probably traveling in tandem with the train for some miles...

We expect to travel to Reno by California Zephyr next year -- all your truckers stay smart!

I know, I haven't been carrying my weight on the "always expect a train" thread of late -- and that's a shame because I think
trains and railroads need more respect. Not only do i use them to get around, but a lot of commerce up our way depend on them... and
too many people walk the track like they are sidewalks, which they are not, by golly.

meanwhile, this rather sad note about what some pathetic creatures have done to a railroad museum --

A reminder -- we will be traveling by train to Oasis next May -- hope to see some of you at the con...

this happened at a town we've never stepped off the train in, but which we've been through in good weather and bad, and which is notable for being in a flood plain. One of the sad things about many of these rail-pedestrian and rail-auto things I cite here is that in a lot of cases I can quickly picture in my mind where they happen. Mostly they are 100 percent avoidable.

quote from the LINK DIRECTLY ABOVE --
"When a train crushes a car, it's equivalent to the force with which a car crushes a pop can."

Elsewise, today's run to the P.O. brought with it sightings of yet another grove of trees (this is 4 in a week) cut for retail expansion. Let's hope jobs are as green.

Talking with Theo is going slow, but meanwhile this was forwarded to me by someone who has noticed my "Always expect a train thread" ...

"If you live in the US and use Amtrak for intercity travel, particularly in the West, take note."

http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/green/articles/2008/07/01/mccains_agenda_on_amtrak/

Basically an assertion that of the two major candidates for President of the US one favors and supports Amtrak while another wishes to gut it.

Back to work, me.

Cleaned up some of the tomato plants this morning, moved the humming bird feeder pole out of harms way, did some minor PR stuff, have an afternoon meeting in town, stuff to pack this morning. Will catch you if I can.

Right, right there it is -- another lucky fellow...

OK, I'm off to the city in a few minutes, and who knows, more progress may be made on several fronts... cross fingers.

I had a library trustee meeting last night that went overtime. Amazing how interesting the mechanics and necessities of book drops can be.

Anyhow, in between things the last few days I've been running a book or two behind Rolanni's pursuit of reading the whole of Girl Genius in perfect bound format ... yesterday I took the last of lunch as a break and finished book 7. Fannishly, I can't wait for Book 8. (Hurry up, gang!).

As time permits, more.

Note -- it appears that people are being killed in train-car incidents almost daily. Please do not try to outrun a train to the gate, do not walk on the railroad tracks, do not go swimming from railway bridges, and don't climb on trains. Really.
