For the third convention/show in a row, the Lee & Miller traveling roadshow table has been the -- last thing seen on on local TV coverage of the event. Alas, each time we're in the closing shot with a general voice over about something else -- you may recall that closeups of several of our SRM and Baen titles were seen in the NASFIC coverage showing Glennis LeBlanc's table The Missing Volume table set-up, just at the end of that coverage.

In this case, we weren't interviewed on TV because we were busy with customers or fans every time the crew came our way, and then we were off at the panels, and so missed that run through. There's an extremely brief glimpse of Sharon's head as she's adjusting the table at about 9 seconds into the clip -- you'll have to trust me on that.  But, somewhere around 38 seconds into this coverage we can both be seen (about 4 seconds worth!) sitting behind the table with the Saltation cover and (for the cognoscenti) Hexapuma's favorite book displayed on the corner. Event promoter Gibran Graham kept things going smootjly and we were happily impressed with the Spectacular Event Center's crew and venue.

http://www.wabi.tv/news/14337/bang-pop

We had a great time all day, talked to some folks well familiar with our work and some who'd never heard of us -- one of the joys of a convention or show in Maine is that you end up with Canadian visitors -- and finished up in time to visit the nearby Mr. Paperback where we signed available Lee & Miller titles in a driveby fostered by info supplied by the Hetleys.

We're hoping to add BangPop to a regular schedule -- next year's early WorldCon ought to make that fairly easy for us.

Meanwhile, if you missed us in Bangor this week, maybe you can catch us in Augusta -- http://www.lithgow.lib.me.us/events/index.html  -- apparently several local papers have run a nice color photo and the full PR piece from the library -- like this:
http://www.thevalleyvoice.org/2010/09/16/science-fiction-authors-sharon-lee-and-steve-miller-to-read-at-lithgow-library-on-thursday-september-23rd/23352/     Come if you can -- we'd like to see you there.

I've mailed off a half ton of books -- the first 812 copies of Saltation, or the first two thrids -- this morning; there are still more than 300 to go, but we just plain ran out of room to sign, stack, pack, the first batch. I hope to have the rest on the way, including the bulk of the overseas orders, Friday and Monday, since we still have almost 400 more books to sign. Sticker shock -- the books sent out of the North American continent will cost on the order of $13 plus (each) to mail -- and that's not including the cost of of the box. In other words, more than half of each support donation will be eaten by the US Postal Service. Sigh... is not sufficient!

Also, just in case we haven't mentioned this enough, here's your chance to help spread the Liaden word as well as help those ebook community see
they don't have to be stick with apple or amazon when it comes to ebooks.-- we're giving away 36 ebook copies of the Dragon Variation to celebrate the advent of Mouse and Dragon and The Dragon Variation and these are all designated for FIRST TIME Liaden readers.... if you've been trying to convince someone, here's a good way to get them started. Also? if you have a blog,  let us know that you've posted news of the drawing and you can be part of a drawing for a Barnes and Noble gift certificate!   See http://sharonleewriter.com/2010/07/expanding-universe-contest/

Also: Sharon will *not* be going to NASFIC, in Raleigh, but I will attend, and take part in such things as a Friends of Liad breakfast if we can raise enough early-risers one day -- and a Liaden Lounge if those plan have gone forth.  Watch for details, or write if you wish to take part or have already started planning. I hope to arrive the day before the con starts, but much will depend on travel conditions on way down ...

Thanks to SF REVU ... Another good review of Saltation:

Wow -- coming down off last-night's two ice tea (lemon, no sugar, keep the raspberry in the jelly!) celebration at Cacciatore's ... for the 32nd anniversary of the start of our joint cat-keeping experiment ...

to find that there's things need doing. I'm outta here after I pack a lunch, got mumblety mumblety orders to catch up on ...

Meanwhile the wider world goes on. I did not get tickets to the President's speech in Portland... and then was busy, and today besides packing I need to finish some more tweeting for the baenbooks tweet factory, and I should let you know that we've been noticed by other readers ...
for example, over here: http://unclehugo-edgar.livejournal.com/131457.html ; you'll see 3 Lee & Miller books under the bestselling for march list; surprisingly two of those are SRM Publisher titles. Cool!

Also, Sharon has issued a call (over on her blog) for actual reader reviews of Saltation to be added to online bookstores now that it is nearly out in paper and is available in webscriptions -- feel free to spread the word!

I see Second Life has a new browser style interface available -- I for one like it, and find it much faster and less clumsy to use.

Our plans for the weekend diverge -- Rolanni's off to a community fair event tomorrow while I expect to be writing here and then spending some time at the office... the cats, it seems, have inked in naps for all, but we'll have to do that on Sunday ...
kinzel: (bookish)
We've had a hectic week or two given cat things (thanks for all those who have donated to the Liaden Universe trip jar to help defray Hexapuma's ear-polyp clearing operation -- he's doing much better now!) and now we are settling back into an almost normal catch-up mode.  In the midst of planning our upcoming Guest of Honor trips to Orlando and Naperville we just got word that Publishers Weekly has a no-discouraging words review of Saltation posted: http://tinyurl.com/pwlaudingsaltation -- you'll need to drop down to the fantasy and science fiction section to find it.

We're also starting to firm up some of the NASFIC planning -- watch this space for more info as that gels. And have you checked out our recently updated cover collection over on Facebook? That's at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2039257&id=1385731027&l=bdab0db1d5

We're pleased to announce that, as of this afternoon, we, through the good offices of our agent Jennifer Jackson, and Toni Weisskopf, Publisher, have closed the deal for the book that is, at once, the follow on to I Dare and the follow on to Saltation, working title: _Ghost Ship_. Our deadline is August of 2010; WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLICATION DATE YET

First, Rolanni, aka Sharon, has posted a poll and there's still time to take part....

This is a poll for Liaden readers ... at http://rolanni.livejournal.com/464424.html -- please help if you have a few moments.

This morning I did one more pass on the Saltation manuscript, eliminating those pesky smart quotes, and then sent copies to Toni at Baen, and to our agent. Out the door! Whee...

On the home front, mail, with a very modest check from the sale of German rights to Plan B among the stack of car insurance ads. If I shop carefully, my check'll cover food for the week!

My BaltiCon schedule is firming -- will I see you there? Looks like I'll have a busy Saturday afternoon and evening on the program front. I'm expecting to be there through the end of the con on Monday, Labor Day. If there's not a schedule conflict you may see me at the Baen slide show... and if you're up to breakfast, perhaps Monday morning would be good!

On the SRM Publisher front, I got to read the story that came in yesterday -- yessir -- watch for news, this one is a winner! We hope to get it out in time for Christmas.

And really -- I have to go to the office and I have to go food shopping.

And now:

National train footage:
kinzel: (Default)
Saltation has my full attention this morning, so I may not get into the office yet again today unless I have a breakthrough. The book is about 3,500 words light right now ...

On the computer we got TV in the background --
the Hubble mission -- http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html this crew has my admiration

Am considering adding a 15X70 vaguely hand-holdable set of binoculars to my arsenal instead of
a ?(12 or better) X 100 astronomical only pair. Still waffling ... 15 X 70 could do the trick ... the big guys really are tripod only ....

Got word, on the SRM Publisher front, that one of the other chapbook candidates is sending on a story submission -- see me rub hands together happily. On another chapbook project we got a realy nifty quote in today. Progress...

In the background -- there have been all kinds of cat issues this week, a multi-visit to the vet, so we're currently dispensing eye drops, ear drops, and ointment. Whee ....
kinzel: (Lord Black Cat)
Sunny this morning, which is good, thought the ground is still too damp for me to go do a tree census. Thanls for those of you who wrote here or in email with tree books suggestions. We decided that, given the current zombie apocalypse, we better just borrow some books from the library, which I have done. More on that later ....

Still calling for rain or chance of showers through Monday night ... May showers bring May mud -- you can count on it.

Yesterday I stayed home, working on Saltation... and in the midst of pouring rain we ended up with truck, truck, truck, including the new monitors for the office, a Smekday something or other book for Sharon, and the replacement router for the office.. which got delivered here as the old address of record -- go figure. At least I was here to keep it dry.

I'll go in for a short while today but may not have time to finagle the new router and all ...

Also yesterday, I got the electronic files of a chapbook project I'm hoping to have out in October. Looks like a busy few weeks coming up.

Saltation - finished rewiring a very difficult section which had to move from here to there in order to make a timing change work. We'll hope. This should have been done last week, and now time presses, alas.

This morning I'm: watering the cats, cooking chicken so we'll have some for the weekend writing extravaganza, looking over the the grocery list for when I come home from work, catching up on some email, printing some orders, finding socks that match, and maybe cutting a tomato so I can have a salad for lunch at work.

The day lily grounds are looking good; the tree that was dying last year is now dead and that means the lily-spot will have full sun. Zoom!

Yes, coffee. had some, will have some more.

Question for the masses: has the H1N1 virus affected your travel plans short term, midterm, or long term?

and just in case you got used to that toobie thing, a rerun:

Not going in to the SRM office today, sticking close to home.

OK -- anyone out there need/want some Claritin and/or generic equivalent? We've got some here we're removing from the house since we *both* get jitters and moody when we take it. Today is a pretty bad allergy day and the idea was to hit it early, as a preventative strike ... but geesh. Me, I'm not having a good track record with these things.

Elsewise today, Theo and I are talking. Not getting a lot of these final patches done quickly, but talking, so Saltation moves on -- fuzzy allergy fighting brain doesn't help.

The neighbors across the street are remodeling their house and adding a garage. Can you say noise and traffic in the country? makes taking that contemplative morning walk even iffier -- construction noise *and* turkey season ... maybe i stay in and talk with the cats.

Oh yeah, I forgot -- here's that link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwZcJheRqBA ... which is the link to the youtube final installment of the Buzzy Multimedia interview .... which ought to be looking tubelike beneath here ...

Still working on Balticon .. .sigh; so everyone seems to be having travel doubts. Me, if they'll tell me I can have a table in the dealer's room, I'll be there. Without the table I probably can't afford the weekend. Gah! on the checks that are in the mail.

OH right, if you visit our SRM Piblisher shop on Publishing Island in Second Life you can get a note card with the youtube links on it... thanks gang!

Final note on the day ... I think we started waking up with the cats around 5 AM today ... you see, the cats use the sunlight as a measure of starting the day and this time of the year .. it gets sunny here early. Two things going on: one is that we are fairly far north, and the other is that we're in a spot that should actually be in the timezone to our right. Long days in the summer, yessir!
kinzel: (Default)
As promised some time back (isn't RSN a useful time-frame?) we have the first installment of Saltation, rough-draft podcast. No, the podcast isn't rough, but the weekly posting will be from the rough draft and not the (still being worked on) final draft.

Long time Liaden fan Charlie Schlenker is providing voice, Sam Chupp has arranged hosting and support and the image you see here, and starting next week the podcast will go live on ... Mondays, instead of Monday evening as it did this time.

Please feel free to spread the word!

So, didja know Saltation Chapter 19 has been up since last night?

Realio. See: http://www.korval.com/saltation/

Meanwhile, I spent much of Saturday engulfed in a chessic fog ... and came away from the Chess Maine championship with a score of 2-2 on the day, 1/2 point out of the money, which is not all that bad after an 8 year or more USCF lay-off. My best game... was a loss to a player rated on the order of 500 points more than me .. and it was a loss because of a final tunnel vision on my part after having pushed through what should have been a winning combination to queen a pawn... oh well. All about execution.

We're going to be AFK --- Away From Keyboard, that is, starting RSN. Catch you sometime next week if I don't catch you later today.

Here's a something to do on your coffee break:

Everyone, or almost everyone, uses Google. Sometimes, though, Google wears thin. So are there other search engines you'll use from time to time?

Here's a couple I've played with ...

Ms. Dewey is one ...

but wait, there's more! Don't use Ms. Dewey until you turn down your speaker just a bit, just in case...
and for some offices, she might draw a frown if a boss is nearby.

http://msdewey.com/

That's because Ms Dewey has been known to break into song, just because you've requested a search...and yes, sometimes she's a bit ... brazen. You can practice on "Liaden, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller" if you like

http://kartoo.com/

kartoo is a different kind of graphic search engine: not as noisy, and you've got to be willing to interact and make choices. Again "Liaden, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller" is a good first search...

Also, an interesting Google result:

Use Google, type in" saltation ... click on the first Lee and miller story link you find...

ah, I'd also suggest James Hetley, Lawrence Schoen, and Clarion West as potential kartoo searches...

And now, I ate my pumpkin donut, finished the day's second cup of coffee, so it is back to work.
kinzel: (Default)
Feeling our oats...

Actually, that's oat cereal. You want to write good books you gotta eat good food. Or something like that.

It looks like the (Complete brand?) oat cereal we'd been eating has disappeared from the marketplace, as things will from time to time. So, we've been experimenting ... getting a somewhat passing grade so far are Barbara's Shredded Oats and Mother's Tasted Oat Bran. We use Cheerios from time to time, and now have Oatios to try. Displeasing to the point of feeding half the box to the birds -- Nature's Path Organic Mulitgrain Oatbran Cereal.

Chess last evening was disappointing; I played two rated games and lost them, though I wasn't blown out of the water, then I played a bunch of unrated games where I was ... really not sharp. Even the last one where I had a huge advantage .. and let my opponent get a stalemate. Got to slow down, looks like.

And looking ahead, I'm probably going to declare another break in Saltation, as in no Saltation next week, as I reread and go over the existing Longeye portions so we can rectify two plot problems we've just spotted before they bite us in the last chapter.
kinzel: (Default)
I hate it when software insists on updating itself when I'm in the middle of a project. Convenient? No.

I also despise APPLE for their sneak attack Safari-dumping. No Macs here, no IPhones, no silly little music boxettes, OK? My ears are clear. Safari is *not* what I want. I have Firefox 3 beta 5 running, I have the newest Opera running. Take a hike, Safari!

So, that said, I did manage to finally get the Saltation chapter up today, about an hour late. Even if it isn't as clean as it ought to be. Some drafts are like that.

Chess tonight. Maybe I'll get to try out my new digital clock. I kinda dislike digital clocks, which are hardly as readable as analog for someone who has been playing chess with *real* clocks for 43 years, but I'll need to have some experience with them if I want to TD these days. Progress.

Soon we'll have more info for you about the Write-a-thon for Clarion West. Wheee....

We see that Sony's online e-book store admits we exist:

http://ebookstore.sony.com/search/ebooks.htm?searchtype=q_author&searchtext=sharon+lee&q=&q_author=sharon+lee&q_title=&q_isbn=&x=23&y=10

A cute thing is to try searching on Steve Miller ...
if you find that page with a photo of a guy with no beard? That ain't me.

Hokay, away we go!
kinzel: (Second Life)
Some things are happening, and some more things are happening...and after that, there's more to do...

Still gotta get the rest of the trash out.... and then, closing on the refi, which will take a few hours out of the day, which means I gotta get my act in gear and get out of here to get to Augusta on time. Wheee....

After this is out of the way, need to pack about 20 SRM Publisher orders by the weekend. I'm working on it.

Also, the SLBF2008 coupon on SRM Publisher's catalog goes over very soon, the day after Mother's Day.

Please see that comments on the following properly go elsewhere. Thank you, this is a recorded announcement. Nothing can go rwong.

Ok -- The beta for the new Fledgling page is up at http://www.korval.com/fledgling/index.php ...

we're taking comments on it at: http://community.livejournal.com/theo_waitley/59335.html which is part of the Fledgling community... thank you.

Now that the work on the Fledgling and Saltation stuff is proceeding I'm also going to be needing eyes and ideas for the rest of the Liaden and Lee&Miller stuff that's been allowed to get a midge behind the times.
Don't *do* anything yet, just think about it and then we'll get things moving ... perhaps on the FoL mailing list. Maybe on the Liaden spoilers list, if I can find that link... but not at the moment...

We're closing in on arrangements for a Friends of Liad breakfast at Worldcon. We'll need a central person/place to help with this, this time around, so we can coordinate space and time with the con committee to make this an official con-type event. In the past we coordinated a lot of these things through the Meisha Merlin table and network; that's gone. Do we have enough people planning on attending to put together a Friends of Liad fan table? We're still waiting on news about the party suites, alas.

Zoom ...
catch you all in a bit ...
and do cross fingers and toes, light candles, and think good thoughts for Jay Lake, who has cancer surgery coming up RSN:

Chugging right along:
Did you know that May 10 is National Train Day? Is. See http://www.nationaltrainday.com/
News in Maine is that the Downeaster gets closer to Downeast! http://www.sunjournal.com/story/264124-3/MaineNews/Downeaster_may_expand_in_Maine/
... and so if the Downeaster comes to Brunswick, that'd make our trips south another 1/2 hour smoother.

Managed to get something up for Theo on Saltation yesterday, yay, team. At the time that was getting online I was making multiple trips to town, having gotten all the way to the driveway of the hospital for a bloodwork appointment before realizing I'd forgotten paperwork I needed to bring with. I was already feeling out of order because of the thick air, I guess. I have several routine doctor appointments this week, and .. .well see the end of the post.

Last night was chess night, which I went to despite still feeling under the weather, or under the pollen, at least. Arrived a little late, to find all available players in games. I waited, staring at other people's games, wondering why I was still there because my snuffle seemed suddenly well on way to sinus headache. Eventually a game ended, and it was my turn for some short games. In my first game...I let a won game wander away; changed my glasses from reading glasses to prescription glasses in middle of it but by then it was too late. Second game I won, almost accidentally, when my new opponent misread the motive for my early pawn spike and castled into my attack. Despite fierce resistance... and a blunder on my part ...I managed to pull that one out. My third game, I won on time. My opponent tried to show he had a won game (if the game had gone on) but... I don't trust instant at-board postmortems and besides that, I'd won, so I took the game and then went home very early, headache winning out over chess. Once home a quick snack and to bed fighting the headache, which mostly won. I did get a few hours sleep and slept right through breakfast as Rolanni got herself together and out to work.

Today is a high pollen count day, too, lucky me..and tomorrow looks to be as well. Wheee....

Meanwhile, we (as SRM) did manage to get in a few cases of books from the latest and last rescue of Meisha Merlin stuff. Some of the recent arrivals are not in as good shape as we'd like, looking like returns or warehouse age, since the warehouse was in some disarray there at the end, I gather -- watch for some specials!

And so it can be rumored...looks like our Credit Union mortgage specialist has managed to cut through some red tape we couldn't figure out and we'll be going to closing on our refi in near record time, all things considered. Given the labyrinthine path we've taken to get here --- I think we've worked through six government agencies and seven or eight or nine addresses as they merged, emerged, remerged, and renamed themselves since we first applied for the original mortgage ... so much for stable government, eh?

So, (thank you Walter) if all goes well, we'll be closing on the new, non-government mortgage on Thursday, at the credit union office. I am *so glad* we joined the credit union. And after it all, the difference on our monthly payment will be about enough for us to go out to breakfast once every other month. Well, that's useful. Hey, this'll happen in time for us to eat breakfast three times at WorldCon if we save up!
kinzel: (Default)
Yesterday was intermittent ...

We had snow/sleet turning to snow/ice pellets turning to ice pellets/snow to ice pellets/freezing rain to freezing mist to mist and back again... a real mess.

over the day I was working, as I could, on the new catalog; things got hairy though because somewhere between here and there we were having both cable (call it connectivity) interruptions as well as power fluctuation and outages. We're on the last mile of cable and in the midst of thick woods -- ten years ago we were just about at ground zero of the ice storm --

Starting yesterday around 4 PM until about 1 AM this morning I must have heard the UPS klaxons a few dozen times; Sharon came sliding home from work and we read and used laptops rather than fight the fight with trying to get cable back online consistently, then we broke for early cheese and baloney sammich with pink wine instead of trying to cook anything.

Meanwhile, today in bright sun, work goes forth on several SRM projects ... we've looked at several offices in the last weeks and have been gnawing at getting the database-crashed orders out to readers. if you ordered from SRM between October and January and haven't seen something you thought you should have, please check the order email for an address to email me so I can check it out. We had around a dozen orders that could not be delivered as addressed and a number of others that seem to have just ... evaporated. I'd really like to get this stuff cleaned up before the new catalog goes online. Speaking of which:

Those of you who have been given the secret SRM Publisher test-site info, feel free to take a look at the updated catalog, which is almost showing form and function. RSN, we hope.

Oh yes, sometime I need to update the word-counts for Saltation .. .right now I have no clue how far along it actually is, wordwise.

Today is trash day ... guess I better skate the trash out to the "curb" ... which is about a 60 inch tall pile of snow at the end of the drive. With temps to go to the 40s today, it'll be damp later.

Note to SFWAns: I'm not fond of getting let's recast the Nebulas. We could start now and have the revamped format in place for 2010.
