We stopped yesterday and picked up a couple bags of birdseed ... and today we've got birds. Grackles, red wings, cardinals (Mr. and Mrs.) doves, chickadees, titmice, sparrows ... it helps that we've also had a foot or so of very heavy wet snow and we've been lucky that the winds haven't taken the power lines with them so far. it is still snowing as i type ...

it is a good thing we don't plan to go out RSN ... since there's a wall of sense wet snow at the end of the driveway that we'll let out plowguy take care of, assuming he;s coming by. Not for *me* to handshovel, nossir.

Given a snow day ... I played in the dough and made some rolls. This dough is not quite working out the way we hoped yet -- while it is providing s nice tasty food, it isn't rising properly for us, so it is unusable in the sandwich mode. Sigh, I guess, and sigh again.

Also, the snow means we didn't take the 70 packed Skyblaze out to the PO. Monday and Tuessday ought to see most of the rest off.

As an odd end, we've been asked if it is OK for our "vanity plate" to be used in an upcoming book -- being asked doesn't insure use,
but hey, that's cool -- if you've been to a convention we drive to, yes, this is ours: http://platepoets.mycapture.com/mycapture/photos/JXImage.aspx?ImageID=521776&EventID=743312&CategoryID=49517&CollectionID=1132&Sort=

A lot of my time today went into going over my shelves and withdrawing such classics as guides to OpenOffice 1.0, Paint Shop Pro 7,
Xandros Version 3, not to mention a web design guide copyright 2002 which informs me that it was produced on Corel Ventura Publisher. Oh for the days when Corel was a real business! I hate to get rid of books, though, so pulling these is just so hard....

A reminder:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm4vr_Vv7l4
is my first book trailer; right now I'm at work on concepts for several more, which I hope ot have complete before Easter 2012 ... or maybe even by July 1 of this year. We shall see.

I note that the proof for the new version of The Cat's Job was approved on Thursday morning, and despite the print shop's owner guessing it might be done by Friday late  the person who actually does traffic for the business laughed quite heartily and the suggestion and let me know that if we were the only people in line it might be theoretically possible to get it done that soon, if everybody on staff spent all their time working exclusively on... yeah, in other words, we ought to have them in house at SRM Publisher Tuesday or Wednesday, so those orders will get in the mail  RSN.

BTW, the cover for The Cat's Job, and an updated ad for SRM Publisher, can be found here:

http://serialuniverse.com/

Saturday means Sharon was writing, so I made breakfast (chicken tenders and Swiss cheese with tomato and mayo on English muffins) ... and lunch: eggdrop soup with lots of veggies over a no cholesterol whole wheat pasta ... maybe I'll just have a cheese sammich for supper.

Oh yeah, last night we had video night. My Neighbor Totoro is sure a change from Have Gun Will Travel! ....

Supper calls.

I've spent much of the morning fiddling with SRM stuff trying to clear the way for a Liaden short story I'm working on ...
and among other things, this means that i had to get into the innards of the SRM catalog ... and I tried to figure out some short term coupons and finalyl said heck with it because it would be a pain in the neck for me -- and you, if you;re interested -- to fiddle with all those coupons ...
so I ended up  changing some prices ... the best deals may be
on Liaden Universe Companion 2 hardcover, and Partners in Necessity --

but I talk about there at more length:

http://serialuniverse.com/

now the wind is way up and the power's flickering, Guess i got this done just about it time!  Also, there's been some additions to the cover images over at Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2039257&id=1385731027&l=bdab0db1d5
the latest inclusion is cover #101 ... the German anthology with a translation of the Liaden story Fighting Chance.

We have a new book out ....

wait, we've done that before. No need to jump up and down and cheer and ... we must be dignified and professional about publishing. So I'm told....

Yeah right. if it wasn't still exciting and fun, I don't think we'd still be doing it, you know?

In any case, the fact is that I picked up a small partial run of Double Vision late yesterday afternoon, and during a computer down-time caused by last evening's bands of thunderstorms we managed to sign a good number of them -- so on theory I ought to be getting the first few dozen pre-orders of Double Vision into the mail today, at which point the book really will be out. The cover is striking ... www.srmpublisher.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp

and I'm not sure if I get to run to Augusta to pick up the rest of them today, or not, since we're also working on other stuff -- like seeing if we can pick up Sharon's new-to-her set of wheels. I also today have to do the annual registration on my car and get some other real life thing in gear... and pick up the insurance thing proving coverage in Canada ... if you're driving to Worldcon, you ought to have this.

kinzel: (Default)
The Double Vision time-line has slipped a bit, in part because I've been distracted by some other necessary business and in part because my printers tell me they'll need extra time because they've been lucky enough to be expanding despite the zombie apocalypse that has hurt so many businesses in Maine. So, we're now looking to late June or early July for shipping .... sigh.

The other reason for delay is that I clearly underestimated prep time working with old "finished" files. It continues to amaze me how many artifacts of word processing and publishing programs survive multiple conversions to come back and haunt me. In this case, deep in a proof, I now find letters in red, added by a copy editor some years back. Gah ... which brings up part of the point of the post: I need a few more eyes on the not-quite-ready Double Vision file, despite that they are, everyone, derived from previously published material, most, supposedly from the publication files.

Sharon's working on the Mouse and Dragon submission revision now that I've gone over it -- and rather than distract her with Double Vision, I'm looking for a few readers who can take a PDF file and look it over this weekend in search of dropped paragraphs, missing pages, and the like. If you're interested, please drop me a line at editor1 (that's at srmpublisher.com ) ... depending on how many readers I get I may ask for help on a chapter basis or a front/back basis.... again, editor1 ( at srmpublisher.com )

And in view of this delay, we'll be running the Double Vision subscription offer at srmpublisher.com through Monday morning...

Thanks!

Saltation has my full attention this morning, so I may not get into the office yet again today unless I have a breakthrough. The book is about 3,500 words light right now ...

On the computer we got TV in the background --
the Hubble mission -- http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html this crew has my admiration

Am considering adding a 15X70 vaguely hand-holdable set of binoculars to my arsenal instead of
a ?(12 or better) X 100 astronomical only pair. Still waffling ... 15 X 70 could do the trick ... the big guys really are tripod only ....

Got word, on the SRM Publisher front, that one of the other chapbook candidates is sending on a story submission -- see me rub hands together happily. On another chapbook project we got a realy nifty quote in today. Progress...

In the background -- there have been all kinds of cat issues this week, a multi-visit to the vet, so we're currently dispensing eye drops, ear drops, and ointment. Whee ....
kinzel: (Lord Black Cat)
Sunny this morning, which is good, thought the ground is still too damp for me to go do a tree census. Thanls for those of you who wrote here or in email with tree books suggestions. We decided that, given the current zombie apocalypse, we better just borrow some books from the library, which I have done. More on that later ....

Still calling for rain or chance of showers through Monday night ... May showers bring May mud -- you can count on it.

Yesterday I stayed home, working on Saltation... and in the midst of pouring rain we ended up with truck, truck, truck, including the new monitors for the office, a Smekday something or other book for Sharon, and the replacement router for the office.. which got delivered here as the old address of record -- go figure. At least I was here to keep it dry.

I'll go in for a short while today but may not have time to finagle the new router and all ...

Also yesterday, I got the electronic files of a chapbook project I'm hoping to have out in October. Looks like a busy few weeks coming up.

Saltation - finished rewiring a very difficult section which had to move from here to there in order to make a timing change work. We'll hope. This should have been done last week, and now time presses, alas.

This morning I'm: watering the cats, cooking chicken so we'll have some for the weekend writing extravaganza, looking over the the grocery list for when I come home from work, catching up on some email, printing some orders, finding socks that match, and maybe cutting a tomato so I can have a salad for lunch at work.

The day lily grounds are looking good; the tree that was dying last year is now dead and that means the lily-spot will have full sun. Zoom!

Yes, coffee. had some, will have some more.

With snow coverage at home around 30% or so today I'm guessing we'll still have a pocket or two come April 1. Not sure anyone will see an April 1 report from here , however, between the anticipated virus -- http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/128643/beware-conficker-worm-come-april-1/ -- and my growing distaste for the (often tasteless) stupidities of April Fools day.

My reaction to April Fools Day casts me as a Boring Old Fart for sure, but it really isn't funny when millions of people try to outdo each other in sending false information, calling others names, and acting silly. That's a normal day, and we call it life. Then April 1 comes around the floodgates open when the clue-light show off their wit. I, for one, avoid Locus Magazine Online in April and ... well, maybe I'll only do email on April 1, which this year is on Wednesday which makes it an anything can happen day, anyway.

So there -- I'm a Boring Old Fart -- I don't think Over The Hill parties are funny. I don't think much of what passes for sitcom humor is funny. And I don't think being absurd on April 1 is magically funny.

Next:

Today's plan is to go into the office in the morning, get stuff done, sign some books for a couple of bookstores (Mysterious Galaxy will *so* have Longeye in stock with our signature!) and have them ready for Sharon to sign when she gets off works and stops by, pack those books, and take them to the PO for ship-out, in late afternoon. Gosh ... sounds like work. I'll also do some talking to Theo as I'm moving boxes around, if she'll say anything to do me other than stamp her feet and demand that I not cut that scene where ... oh well, we shall see.

Yesterday our minion stopped by and proceeded to rearrange and count books so we might have a running inventory that I can then get in to the software so we have a closer approximation for the catalog .... wheee! We hope she'll be back today for another bout of book-pushing.

Oh yeah, Constellation Books reports they have Longeye in stock --see them at http://www.constellationbooks.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp --

I'll note that Lauretta's shop is about 100 feet south from where we, as Bookcastle and Dreamsgarth, had our 2nd bookstore... and about a mile north of our first one. Go Lauretta!

So, yes, been away from the blog a few days.

Monday we drove about 550 miles between going for Hexapuma the new coon cat (driving to Oneonta from Albany and coming on home from Oneonta) and Tuesday was something of catching up on lots of details all around and talking to the folks in Waterville with the office to let, again, about the space they have for lease.

What does Hexapuma look like? He's only two, so he doesn't have full growth yet, but he kind of looks like:

and at 11 pounds plus he looks fairly big...

Oh yeah. Spent parts of the rest of the week looking at and fiddling with leases; yesterday we signed on a small office in not-quite-downtown Waterville. The landlord will have a cleaning crew getting in over the weekend and will do some minor repairs as well; we may actually be able to start moving things in by the end of next week. Meanwhile, watch for a moving-in sale from SRM...

More as we have time...

Note 1:

Another trip to the car place in order, this one tomorrow early, and it may be a long one.

We're going to try to get the in-car location device.. in this case a very simple digital direction-header compass in the mirror -- fixed. Those of you familiar with my North by Northwest post after my trip to Montreal last year may recall the joy of depending on my system... when it failed.

Rather than springing for a GPS, we'll see what the car folks can do. I'd rather not add one more layer of complexity to my trips, and over the years I've been well served by compass-heading navigation. We, shall see. If this does not produce good results I may have to go to the GPS before I wander off on a solo reunion trip to Maryland in November.

Note 2:
Longevity is good, it adds flavor. It adds character. it adds ... complexity. There's that word again. This week the problem has been discovery of a series of SRM orders that have come in under the radar -- meaning I never saw them -- because they relied on cached pages. Yikes -- Paypal dutifully added the (postage-less) orders to the income, but since the catalog never saw them, it never generated a fulfillment or packing slip.

I thought the new system was simpler... but complexity is added because the web tends to hold everything ever HTMLed in gooey tender electric arms. And then, powie, a couple of orders from catalogs I'd distributed *several mainland Worldcons ago* which apparently were unearthed as result of people going home from Denvention and saying to themselves "Gee, didn't we have something from them around here?" So, while hurricane winds may be approaching (today is wonderfully blue!) we'll try to catch that stuff up.

Note 3:
http://www.stellarcon.org/home ...
wonder if I can borrow the countdown gizmo there ...

Note 4:
Hurricane Hanna, oh goody. Current tracking map puts the hurricane approximately in our lap sometime around Noon or 1 PM Sunday. Been awhile since I was in the eye of a hurricane.

Note 5: If I start my tomato extravaganza two weeks early next year ... we ought to be able to grow our own in the now identified tomato zone. In the past our total tomato output some years was zapped by early and unheralded frosts...

Note 6:
Lunch is over, back to work.

So ...
today's "get *Something done, somehow, Steve* has resulted in a (mostly behind the scenes) upgrade of the srmpublisher shop at cafe press, which can be found at: http://www.cafepress.com/srmpublisher ...

and so I ask, since a boardwalk shop is all about stuff, talk to me about what other kinds or varities of stuff we should have there....

No day lily, count is zero. Might be a chance for our first tomato sometime this week, though ... summer comes late in Maine!
kinzel: (Second Life)
Some things are happening, and some more things are happening...and after that, there's more to do...

Still gotta get the rest of the trash out.... and then, closing on the refi, which will take a few hours out of the day, which means I gotta get my act in gear and get out of here to get to Augusta on time. Wheee....

After this is out of the way, need to pack about 20 SRM Publisher orders by the weekend. I'm working on it.

Also, the SLBF2008 coupon on SRM Publisher's catalog goes over very soon, the day after Mother's Day.

Please see that comments on the following properly go elsewhere. Thank you, this is a recorded announcement. Nothing can go rwong.

Ok -- The beta for the new Fledgling page is up at http://www.korval.com/fledgling/index.php ...

we're taking comments on it at: http://community.livejournal.com/theo_waitley/59335.html which is part of the Fledgling community... thank you.

Now that the work on the Fledgling and Saltation stuff is proceeding I'm also going to be needing eyes and ideas for the rest of the Liaden and Lee&Miller stuff that's been allowed to get a midge behind the times.
Don't *do* anything yet, just think about it and then we'll get things moving ... perhaps on the FoL mailing list. Maybe on the Liaden spoilers list, if I can find that link... but not at the moment...

We're closing in on arrangements for a Friends of Liad breakfast at Worldcon. We'll need a central person/place to help with this, this time around, so we can coordinate space and time with the con committee to make this an official con-type event. In the past we coordinated a lot of these things through the Meisha Merlin table and network; that's gone. Do we have enough people planning on attending to put together a Friends of Liad fan table? We're still waiting on news about the party suites, alas.

Zoom ...
catch you all in a bit ...

Chugging right along:
Did you know that May 10 is National Train Day? Is. See http://www.nationaltrainday.com/
News in Maine is that the Downeaster gets closer to Downeast! http://www.sunjournal.com/story/264124-3/MaineNews/Downeaster_may_expand_in_Maine/
... and so if the Downeaster comes to Brunswick, that'd make our trips south another 1/2 hour smoother.

Managed to get something up for Theo on Saltation yesterday, yay, team. At the time that was getting online I was making multiple trips to town, having gotten all the way to the driveway of the hospital for a bloodwork appointment before realizing I'd forgotten paperwork I needed to bring with. I was already feeling out of order because of the thick air, I guess. I have several routine doctor appointments this week, and .. .well see the end of the post.

Last night was chess night, which I went to despite still feeling under the weather, or under the pollen, at least. Arrived a little late, to find all available players in games. I waited, staring at other people's games, wondering why I was still there because my snuffle seemed suddenly well on way to sinus headache. Eventually a game ended, and it was my turn for some short games. In my first game...I let a won game wander away; changed my glasses from reading glasses to prescription glasses in middle of it but by then it was too late. Second game I won, almost accidentally, when my new opponent misread the motive for my early pawn spike and castled into my attack. Despite fierce resistance... and a blunder on my part ...I managed to pull that one out. My third game, I won on time. My opponent tried to show he had a won game (if the game had gone on) but... I don't trust instant at-board postmortems and besides that, I'd won, so I took the game and then went home very early, headache winning out over chess. Once home a quick snack and to bed fighting the headache, which mostly won. I did get a few hours sleep and slept right through breakfast as Rolanni got herself together and out to work.

Today is a high pollen count day, too, lucky me..and tomorrow looks to be as well. Wheee....

Meanwhile, we (as SRM) did manage to get in a few cases of books from the latest and last rescue of Meisha Merlin stuff. Some of the recent arrivals are not in as good shape as we'd like, looking like returns or warehouse age, since the warehouse was in some disarray there at the end, I gather -- watch for some specials!

And so it can be rumored...looks like our Credit Union mortgage specialist has managed to cut through some red tape we couldn't figure out and we'll be going to closing on our refi in near record time, all things considered. Given the labyrinthine path we've taken to get here --- I think we've worked through six government agencies and seven or eight or nine addresses as they merged, emerged, remerged, and renamed themselves since we first applied for the original mortgage ... so much for stable government, eh?

So, (thank you Walter) if all goes well, we'll be closing on the new, non-government mortgage on Thursday, at the credit union office. I am *so glad* we joined the credit union. And after it all, the difference on our monthly payment will be about enough for us to go out to breakfast once every other month. Well, that's useful. Hey, this'll happen in time for us to eat breakfast three times at WorldCon if we save up!
kinzel: (Default)
Sometimes I can't get to Locus immediately; I guess yesterday I should have because we were getting together Liaden Universe® Infodump #68 and you never quite know what news you need.

So I hadn't looked, and the Infodump went out. Later in the evening we sat around after dinner browsing the words we hadn't managed to clear off the table.. and there was Locus.

Sometimes I get grumpy because there's not much in it for me, but this time, there was. In this case, while patting ourselves on the back very gently when spotting the news that Lee & Miller had sold another Liaden book to Baen... always good to get ink! ... when we stumbled across the *fullpage* ad for Duainefey, which is coming up in September. Well, that was pretty cool!

And then, as I was reading along, I glanced at the Locus bestseller list, looking for works of friends and acquaintances. Wow -- a good month, with Anne and Todd McCaffrey up there on one list, Elizabeth Moon up on two...and all together I've been on panels with or otherwise met and spoken with or know around a dozen of the folks with books on the list this time.

Being in the business, as it were, I also look beyond the Top 10 or Top 5 and read the small print. This time I saw the small print there under trade paper and saw that there was a tie for runner-up and hey this is where the drama happens, where the books that almost made it sneak out! Right, and there was this tie for runner-up: China Miéville's Un Lun Dun from Del Rey was tied for 6th, as it were with Dragon Tide by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller ... from SRM Publisher.

Yep, that what it says, and you can mosey on over to Locus Online to see it for yourself:

http://www.locusmag.com/2008/Issue05_LocusBestsellers.html ...down in the fine print.

Coulda knocked me over with a bookmark.

Thank you, reporting specialty stores. Thank you, readers and fans. A tie for sixth ain't bad if you never even thought you were in the race...

So, over there at at Second Life, I gave about an hour talk on Saturday, as part of the Second annual Second Life Book Fair. The talk went well, with only a minor bobble on the voice stuff in the early going, and if you visit Publishing Island you can find both the "regular" SRM Publisher store as well as the booth Shawna and Anhayla were kind enough to put together for us for the fair. I hope those of you in world will take the time to drop by and visit.

The booth has images and links to a bunch of our books and online stuff, and still has a note about a coupon... good at the srmpublisher.com.

So, for the advertent, the coupon code is SLBF2008, and it was originally meant to be used for a free copy of The Tomorrow Log -- that is, free as in beer -- except that you still need to pay the postage. We still have some copies of The Tomorrow Log available, and at checkout entering the code ought to bring you a $6.99 discount. The trick is that I have expanded the coupon so it's good this week for a $6.99 break on anything on the SRM catalog, except postage.

Meanwhile, my morning check of things shows that we've got about 400 copies left of Liaden Universe Companion, Volume 1 -- mass market sized -- and with the costs of paper and shipping going up so rapidly I think the next printing, if there is one, will have to go to $12 to be practical. It's currently at $10, and since it carries within stories that took some folks years to accumulate in chapbook format, it's a great buy for readers catching up.

As a side note, with the recent hoorah about the Meisha Merlin warehouse close to mind, we have around 100 copies left of Partners in Necessity, a couple cases of The Tomorrow Log, and some Plan B trade paper and hardcovers, along with a dwindling supply of Crystal Soldier and Crystal Dragon, in trade size. Better buy it while we got it...

As for local stuff, it is raining hard at the moment -- it started last night while I was off at chess, making my ride home an adventure what with water-filled potholes and intermittent fog. As for chess, I lost my first few games but by the end of the evening was on a roll; I think it's been awhile since I've had multiple rated wins against Reverend Ed on the same night.

Tomorrow we're set for a gig in Augusta at B&N, around 5:30. There are door prizes for educators, and since the rain is now expected to continue only until midnight tonight it may be a great time for some lucky Liaden fan to come on out in the spring weather and win. We'd love to see you -- and if you read this blog, *do* introduce yourself!

Finally, I'm going to be participating in a fund-raiser for Clarion West. All details aren't set, but basically they have a write-a-thon where writers challenge themselves and ask folks to support the effort, with Clarion West getting $bucks to help the Workshop continue. My plan is to write a more or less hard sf story in the mode I was using when I started selling to Amazing ... who knows, it might work! Watch for details.

We like to have our train tickets in hand before we head out for the station: an old habit. So today I ordered the tickets for our trip to Denvention, figuring that, with other convention in town that week and operatives moving in ahead of time for the Democratic Convention (which is in town a couple week after us), room on board might get tight.

So I went through with the deal and found space on-board... and discovered that AMTRAK will permit us to pick up the tickets at the station or ... they will charge us $15 for Express Mail delivery. Got to be someone here to sign for them -- Priority isn't good enough... sigh. I feel so secure.

I am not pleased. On the other hand I'm not driving 2200 miles (each way) in high summer just to object.

So far then: we have ordered tickets. We have reserved rooms. We have put in motion requests for party space. We're looking to have a Friends of Liad breakfast. We have each sent off a bio. We have made preliminary arrangements for cat sitter. We have each sent of a photo, we have begun planning what me might read since ... Duainfey will come out at the end of August (or early September) and not the beginning.

I was also going to start my walking tomorrow, so I'll be in decent shape for the Mile High City. On the other hand, there's snow in the forecast, so I did a short walk today, and rescued Santa Claus to boot.
==========================================

Amended to add: It looks like, given baggage limitations, that I may need volunteers to bring some items with them to Denvention. If you are going to be driving to the con
and might have room for a box or two around 10X18X11 or 12X12X10 (approximates)and under 30 lbs... let me know. Thx!

kinzel: (Second Life)
Up early today to take care of some SRM Publisher business ...we put it off from yesterday because of the traveling in snow stuff... and of course it snowed well into the evening, so our road, at least is well covered and the potholes are lurking. I'll be meeting up with fellow SFNovelist Jim Hetley, at Timmie's ... you know this is Maine when you see the "reserved for snowmobiles" parking section...

Coffee is made.

Sun on the horizon, or at least threatening to come up behind the stand of snow-coated trees. Moon has a section of sky with no clouds. The birds -- blue jays and doves and chickadees are all looking for breakfast, and to tell you the truth, I've only got about 5 lbs of really cheapo birdseed left. Who expected to be feeding this much this late? It doesn't help that the grackles and red wings are in town.

We're making plans to do another in-world Second Life appearance toward the end of April -- hope you can make it. Once I get the SRM Publisher catalog and korval.com rebuild finished (gie me a month or so for it all) I hope to start a weekly writer's coffee hour at the Friends of Liad Park. The park has been open for several years and features a horseshoe-shaped meeting area that lets you sit and talk without losing track of your your avatar or your audience. There's also an SRM Publisher "store" on the lot next door -- take a look.

Also -- if you're in Second Life and you haven't participated in the Sunflower growing, it may be worth a visit to Intel Island. Me -- as Elan Neruda -- I got my seed packet from Shawna Montgomery and thus every time I plant a sunflower in Second Life (with a chance to win a super gaming laptop!) Shawna also gets credit toward being top planter ... and each sunflower also goes toward an Intel donation to a conservation fund. If you're interested in participating in-world, drop Elan Neruda a note andI'll try to send to send you a Shawna seed-pack copy, or else track down almost anyone from Avalon in the Tiny Empires in-world game.

Me for breakfast!

Snow in the forecast:

High wind watch in effect from Friday morning through Friday evening...

Tonight ...Snow likely this evening...then a chance of snow showers after midnight...accumulation of 1 to 2 inches. Chance of snow 70 percent. Friday ... Partly sunny... snow showers in the morning. Blustery with highs around 30. West winds to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent. Friday Night...
snow showers after midnight. Brisk with lows 11 to 16. West winds to 25 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent. Wind chill values as low as 7 below after midnight.

Spring is in the air... somewhere.

That aside, today had unexpected charm, like the news that the thunk-thunk-kerthunka I was hearing in the car was a sign that the transmission mount is giving up the ghost rapidly, possibly victim of pothole city. Did I mention I saw an accident caused by a pothole yesterday?.... So, it turns out the guys at the shop know my next door neighbor the snowmobile guru ... and they cheerfully drove me home while we wait for pieces to arrive so the car can perhaps be put back together tomorrow.

The catalog beta work goes on, and I'm down to sending letters to the last dozen or so of people who've written that they are missing orders. Once they are contacted ... final run throughs on the catalog. Who knows .. might hit tomorrow as long as the car-stuff isn't too complicated. We shall see.

Snow in the sky, soon to be on the wings of the crows and on my deck...

they tell us we'll have a couple inches of snow today, hooray. Ought to be pretty. One of the worst things about having a winter's worth of snow thawing to the ground is that there's also a winter's worth of dirt, dust, sand, soot, leaves, blown-paper, seed hulls, and bird-stuff among it. A reprieve is fine.

I'm going to be warming up the Subaru RSN for a quick morning trip to town. The Sube's headlight transplant was a success and the tire rotation was thrown in for free; the oil change .... was not gratis. On the other hand, we're set for spring a few weeks early.

The email log jam we experienced lat night is apparently over and I have on hand ten or fifteen real emails on the "where's my book" topic. I'm hoping that'll solve some of the half-dozen "moved -- no forwarding order" and "Undeliverable as addressed" things tucked in a box in the basement. The scary thing is that we've had a number of things come back with "Undeliverable as addressed" that have gone to the same address we've been using for people for more than ten years -- and they haven't moved.

More maybe in a bit, after we see what the PO Box brings.

Tomorrow, plans include a Janis Ian concert!

Says the weather dude:

Rain and snow. Freezing rain after midnight. Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches.

Saturday
Freezing rain and sleet.

Saturday Night
Freezing rain and sleet in the evening...then freezing rain and sleet likely after midnight.

Sunday
Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers...freezing rain and sleet in the morning...then mostly sunny in the afternoon

Where *did* that "sunny" sneak in from?

Meanwhile, still doing catch-up on a couple sides of things. Zola, if you read this, we *really are* going to start moving on that update once the catalog is done. New catalog may hit by March 15.

Today's complaint: why are there two exclamation points on the top of the latest issue of Locus?? have they, like...!! gone frenetic?? Got double vision?? No excuse, sez I. The only place multiple punctuation like that make sense is chess -- where ! means something and !? or ?! means something much different. Really!
