Yes, another mixed bag update....

Let's see --

first, Sharon's still working on the Carousel Tides t-shirt project, and there's a a little over 48 hours to get your order in -- she's got to finish taking orders before she can start filling them!

Details can be found here ...
http://sharonleewriter.com/2012/06/carousel-tides-t-shirt-2/

By the way, since Sharon sold TWO more books in the Carousel Tides/ Archer's Beach setting, your shirt could tell lots of people about good reading for years to come. Order by Saturday night Maine, USA time or else... you'll miss the tide!

So let me say this: in 1973 I went to Clarion West writing workshop, in Seattle, Washington. This was a six week long experience, and while I was there I got to work with: James Sallis, Joanna Russ, Ursula LeGuin, Terry Carr, Harlan Ellison, and Peter Beagle, and oh yes, Vonda McIntyre was the workshop coordinator. FM Busby dropped by multpile times.... so yeah, it was great experience.

So, if you're set with t-shirts but still want more good reading, you can help with *my* part in this year's Clarion West Write-A-Thon .... I'm using the write-a-thon period to work on the next Jethri book, which is due to Baen RSN; and I'm asking for sponsors to help get behind me finishing this book.... send a dollar, a dollar a week, or even more -- but this money won't go to me, it'll go to support Clarion West Writing workshop -- the same workshop I attended way back in 1973. Clarion West helped aimed me toward the pro-writing ranks and it has helped dozens more make the jump. Right now more than 200 writers are taking part in the write-a-thon ... you can support any one of us, or split your donation among multiple writers if you like.

http://clarionwest.org/writeathon/stevemiller

Me, I bet big: my goal is to raise $1000 for the workshop. We have some weeks to go and -- according to the latest report from CW's administrators -- we're past the half way point on my bet, with donations in from several countries and more than a dozen states -- so another $400 (just about $100 a week) ... will really be a help. I'm thinking that what I'll do is promise a round up to the next $100 ... so if we reach $903 and I'll personally round it to $1000; if we reach $1177 I'll round it to $1200.

I should say that a big milestone was reached already -- by reaching 200 participants a trigger was reached which brought in an extra $2000 for the the workshop, which has raised close to $15000 already. So, if you've got $10 sitting around and you'd have bought me a glass of wine or a breakfast muffin at Worldcon with -- you can aim it at the CW Write-a-thon since we're not going to Worldcon this year. Help me pay forward and help yourself have lots more good reading down the line ...

Again -- my Clarion West experience meant I got to work with: Vonda McIntyre, James Sallis, Joanna Russ, Ursula LeGuin, Terry Carr, Harlan Ellison, and Peter Beagle. Help a future big-name writer work with the pros and get aimed at a writing career. So far, we've raised a bit over $500 toward my goal, and with 4 weeks to go all we need is another $80 or $100 a week and we'll get there. Thanks for the help!

Hurricane Bill looks like it will be going someplace else ... we'd ahve to really charge up the coast to see the full deal...
so we won't.

Three is the day lily count today. Pretty.

In 1973 I went to Clarion West, where I got to meet and work with some of the top writers in the field. For me it was an amazing experience ...
and I'm glad i went. That particular organization and workshop, affilaited I think with the U. of Washington,  later reformed itself into a non-profit ... and went back to work with the job of helping new writers.

Now the Clarion West folks have let me know they are all of 11 shy of reaching their goal of getting 200 donors for this year's
Clarion West Write-a-thon . These donations help keep Clarion West rolling. What's the big deal? Some folks can use Clarion West to shave years off their writing apprenticeship and, which means more good stories for you, sooner. Also, some of the attendees will discover that they are not ready, or may never be ready, to become the writer they assumed they were going to be -- and this clarity can also shape lives for the better. So, drop over to the page, look at the list of participants, and sponsor one or more -- this is a great way to pay forward, for all of us! You can tell them I sent you, you can look upon the list of other writers participating and sponsor one or more of them -- but please, let the words roll!

Thanks for the help!

I've been busily running around with my SRM Publisher hat on -- and working behind the scenes on some other neat stuff you'll need to Watch The Skies (TM)! to find out about  --  and I keep forgetting to mention my involvement here:

2009 Clarion West Write-a-thon

<a href="http://www.clarionwest.org/events/writeathon/2009"><img src="http://clarionwest.org/WATprogress2.gif" alt="2009 Clarion West Write-a-thon" style="border:0px;" width="500" length="150"></a>

Clarion West is where I got my first real taste of intensively living the writer's life; several of the story ideas I worked on there later evolved into things that *did* get published and some of the lessons I learned there are part of my every day. I mean, really, Clarion West is where I learned to love coffee of course, Clarion West *is* in Seattle.

So quick, you can get involved too, and help pay forward on the writing front. You can sponsor me, you can sponsor other writers. And you know I'm always working on a story, right? By the way, this year's write-a-thon ends on my birthday, so if you like you can save the $2 card-and-postage you send to me and drop it on the Clarion West workshop to help, or send them what you would have spent to buy me a coffee or a soda or a class of Chablis at Worldcon if you can't make it

Oh yeah ... thanks for all the support you've given us, too.

Ooops ... late for the office -- ride where's my coffee?

Whee ...

yes, thank you guys for the birthday wishes in the FoL list, and private email, by US post office..., on other blogs, and etc. Best wishes are appreciated!

Meanwhile, day lily count is six. I think that's 15 on the year.

Remember Mozart's recent trip to the vet? This afternoon he goes back. Whatever we tried to get fixed last week has come back with a vengeance and we're more than a little concerned seeing we get out of there this weekend to go to Denver.

I did want to mention that 35 years ago, today, I'd have just about been awake at this hour in Seattle, and would arrive at the Clarion West workshop common room at 9:00 sharp .. .I think it was sharp, anyway. Which brings me around the the Clarion West Write-a-thon...
wherein I admit that although I've written about 10000 words during this 5 or 6 weeks... none of it was the project envisioned -- well maybe 600 words or so. Mostly I've been doing the last few Saltations and also bits and pieces of these other ideas which might just be the original project ... many of these ideas stem from the poll we did awhile back on what does near future mean to you .... SO:I mentioned this project here
http://kinzel.livejournal.com/195539.html but you can just go to http://www.clarionwest.org/events/writeathon/SteveMiller ... and please, look around... and if you like the idea of nurturing young writers you can use the forms on that page or you can send to

Clarion West
340 Fifteenth Avenue East, Suite 350
Seattle, WA 98112

and mention my name.

So far my name is on a few million words of published science fiction and fantasy, and we've got contracts in house to get another few hundred thousand words out there by 2010 -- and Clarion West helped me ... who knows who might be waiting in the wings?
kinzel: (SFSteve)
As someone who went to Clarion West thirty five years ago I'm participating in this years Clarion West Write-a-Thon ... see my page at: http://www.clarionwest.org/events/writeathon/SteveMiller

alas, my stated goal is to write a new near-future science fiction story and now it turns out that the phrase "near future" creates different expectations for different people. So, I need help figuring out what's near future. I also hear that all near future sf "should be mundane" but ... I dunno.

What's your take:

So, over there at at Second Life, I gave about an hour talk on Saturday, as part of the Second annual Second Life Book Fair. The talk went well, with only a minor bobble on the voice stuff in the early going, and if you visit Publishing Island you can find both the "regular" SRM Publisher store as well as the booth Shawna and Anhayla were kind enough to put together for us for the fair. I hope those of you in world will take the time to drop by and visit.

The booth has images and links to a bunch of our books and online stuff, and still has a note about a coupon... good at the srmpublisher.com.

So, for the advertent, the coupon code is SLBF2008, and it was originally meant to be used for a free copy of The Tomorrow Log -- that is, free as in beer -- except that you still need to pay the postage. We still have some copies of The Tomorrow Log available, and at checkout entering the code ought to bring you a $6.99 discount. The trick is that I have expanded the coupon so it's good this week for a $6.99 break on anything on the SRM catalog, except postage.

Meanwhile, my morning check of things shows that we've got about 400 copies left of Liaden Universe Companion, Volume 1 -- mass market sized -- and with the costs of paper and shipping going up so rapidly I think the next printing, if there is one, will have to go to $12 to be practical. It's currently at $10, and since it carries within stories that took some folks years to accumulate in chapbook format, it's a great buy for readers catching up.

As a side note, with the recent hoorah about the Meisha Merlin warehouse close to mind, we have around 100 copies left of Partners in Necessity, a couple cases of The Tomorrow Log, and some Plan B trade paper and hardcovers, along with a dwindling supply of Crystal Soldier and Crystal Dragon, in trade size. Better buy it while we got it...

As for local stuff, it is raining hard at the moment -- it started last night while I was off at chess, making my ride home an adventure what with water-filled potholes and intermittent fog. As for chess, I lost my first few games but by the end of the evening was on a roll; I think it's been awhile since I've had multiple rated wins against Reverend Ed on the same night.

Tomorrow we're set for a gig in Augusta at B&N, around 5:30. There are door prizes for educators, and since the rain is now expected to continue only until midnight tonight it may be a great time for some lucky Liaden fan to come on out in the spring weather and win. We'd love to see you -- and if you read this blog, *do* introduce yourself!

Finally, I'm going to be participating in a fund-raiser for Clarion West. All details aren't set, but basically they have a write-a-thon where writers challenge themselves and ask folks to support the effort, with Clarion West getting $bucks to help the Workshop continue. My plan is to write a more or less hard sf story in the mode I was using when I started selling to Amazing ... who knows, it might work! Watch for details.
