Going to be cooking a quick chicken tender meal in a few ... meanwhile I've added to Ebay an I Dare --
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250887260302 with no minimum. We're trying cover our unexpected travel bills from the Worldcon trek home -- we hadn't hadn't planned on a hotel night in Toledo or a sudden 711 mile run from Toledo to Albany (where there was an extra hotel bill as well!)... anyone interested in one of these Partners In Necessity first edition hardcovers? The Meisha Merlin price way back when was $50.00 and I have a couple... if you're missing any of the Meisha Merlin books this may be your last chance -- we hope to take some of what what we have to TGNSE -- http://www.thegreatnewenglandsteampunkexhibition.com/ in a couple weeks to help clear the decks for our move-to-town-or-ocean planning,

Also, Sharon's done a Labor Day round-up of what working authors are usually NOT in charge of -- see it here:

Off to stirfry!

The theme this week is Saltation, apparently, what with the Theo-tweet going on at Baenbooks ... and now with the dreaded "Amazon can do it for you cheap" letter arriving according to several readers...

"Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who has purchased or rated Partners in Necessity: Agent of Change / Conflict of Honors / Carpe Diem by Sharon Lee or other books in the ( L ) > Lee, Sharon category, you might like to know that Saltation will be released on April 13, 2010.  You can pre-order yours at ..."

And so there, it *is* getting to be time. Remember, if you need to convince someone about Saltation there's a great PW review on exhibit over at amazon.com ...

"Blazing into their 12th Liaden novel, Lee and Miller prove they can still deliver elegant variations on the theme in this coming-of-age story, a sequel to 2009's Fledgling. ..."

Saltation is  ... available to pre-order from your favorite Indie store, including Pandemonium, Uncle Hugo's, Childrens Bookcellar, Borderlands, and at Powell's, and at most Indiebound stores ... and it is...

here at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Saltation-Sharon-Lee/dp/143913345X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b   (it was ranked #37 in Space Ppera an hour or two ago but right now is at #31 in Space Opera) ...

and it is here at B&N  --  http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Saltation/Sharon-Lee/e/9781439133453/?itm=1&USRI=saltation    (where it was ranked 35,000 and change this morning)  ...

and it is here at Borders -- http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=143913345X

and it is here at Books-A-Million -- http://www.booksamillion.com/product/9781439133453?id=4699518490510

here it is at amazon in the UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saltation-Sharon-Lee/dp/143913345X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269952093&sr=8-1

and here at amazon in Germany they say "Amazon.de Verkaufsrang: Nr. 4.697 in Englische Bücher ... for
http://www.amazon.de/Saltation-Sharon-Lee/dp/143913345X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1269952245&sr=8-1

...and that's as far as my correspondents went -- thanks all, for the help -- has anyone seen it on sale in France, Spain, Japan, or elsewhere?

Another theme is rain. Yep -- rained all day yesterday, raining now, supposed to rain later, and of course we have flood watches. Me? With some luck the books that were *NOT* ready yesterday at the printer will be ready today -- that'd include The Cat's Job revision and two reprints of other chapbooks.

Now to tweet, and then call the printer...

Right. The report is that I'm late.

I am, alas, more behind on things than usual, being both under the weather and multiply occupied. Perhaps chess Monday was not a good plan. Still not king, still not entirely recovered from the trip to Maryland. The cough and cold are being leaning to sinus headaches and related nonsense. We got the furnace fixed; yes it was emitting a bit of smoke and.... no, the CO detector did not go off. Whatever, figure we're *both* somewhat under the weather at this point.

Email is backed up on at least three accounts, Dragon Tides is about 10 days behind where it should be, (which means it is not in the mail and won't be for a few more days) and fixes to websites are behind, too. Shipping of recent orders is behind, but I've been needing to stay close to home. Sorry -- looks like not finding an office in town and attendant intern in the fall is costing me now.

Notes:

got snailmail for SRM Publisher or me? Rather than Unity, send to:

SRM Publisher Ltd
PO Box 707
Waterville, ME 04903

This address should become the official business address over time, might as well start now.

More notes:

Lee and Miller have a new Liaden story out called Misfits -- you can find it under "science fiction" at Jim Baen's Universe, the issue is on sale fresh today. Lee and Miller also recently signed our side of an antho contract for a reprint of our short story Naratha's Shadow; when we have the countersigned copy we'll let you know details.

Weather:
Snowed a dusting overnight, is v breezy, temp is 17 degrees F with a wind chill of 0 F. We've lost power several times this morning, and I'm wondering what that portends since the meteorologist's blog here ( http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GYX&StateCode=ME&SafeCityName=Waterville )figures we have a good chance for significant snow starting tomorrow night, and wind and temps showing lots of blowing fluffy snow a real likelihood. I've met John Jensenius and his forecasting rocks.

I have placed snow shovels -- one beside the door on the deck, and one against the front wall in case someone needs to dig on in and up the stairs. I'm charging my v rarely used cellphone, Haysus the ASUS is charged, and I guess the UPS on the computer downstairs is charged since I haven't had that machine on since before I left for Maryland. We have wood in the basement for the woodstove, but ... we have too many books too close to the stove to use it right now. Gotta have a big sale. See above re office in town: too many books in basement should have been solved before the assessor came and before winter hit.

I should get to email and writing RSN. Got lots of things to catch up on. Scrabble is proposing a nap. Where's my flipping coin?

Over the weekend:

we stayed home, because of the snow/ice/freezing fog. Much of it was very pretty. The snow itself was about three times heavier per six inches than any other snow we've had this year. We had wind, we had rain, we had the plow guy show up....

We didn't have surf, no, not here. However, there's a place called Camp Ellis that the Corp of Engineers has screwed royally over the years by building and rebuilding a jetty that's helping destroy the place ... you know, I'm from the government and I'm here to help you!

If these links still work you can get an overview of the recent activity down there at Camp Ellis in a video or look carefully at the Port Press thing and find the slide show, which is impressive ... the video of the road the guy drove out on...wow -- been on that road and he's lucky to have gotten out without toppling into the ocean...

About staying home -- we worked on stuff. Like Fledgling, and with luck all I have to do is upload a couple files at 11:59 1/2 for todays episode. We worked on the story for Jim Baen's Universe. We worked on catching up with the many posts on Baen's Bar. We worked on being patient... because the printer couldn't get the latest chapbook reprints to us last week. If you've recently ordered an SRM Publisher chapbook it may be delayed.

Ooops... gotta go get that Fledgling teaser up, too.

Attention SFWA Members --

I know some of you read here. So, not interested in voting in an uncontested election? Well there, this note's for you! John Scalzi has opted in as a write-in for Prez and Derryl Murphy as a write-in for VP. No matter who you want in, now that ballot that's just been siting there means something. Details at the SFWA lounge...

Next, ...................................

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 PM this evening
to 2 PM EDT Saturday.

Snow will begin late this afternoon... and become heavy at times
tonight with snowfall rates of an inch or two an hour possible.
The snow will begin to mix with sleet or freezing rain after
midnight...

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected by early
Saturday morning.

Travel will be very difficult. Avoid unnecessary travel. If you
must travel, drive with extreme care and allow plenty of time to
reach your destination.
.....................

And sigh. Would have preferred to have more snow in November and December, me...

But meanwhile, if you've noticed I haven't been around as much, you're right.

Not only has the projected novella for Jim Baen's Universe gotten underway, but... the Philip K. Dick award stuff is happening too.

I've been getting a book or two a day so far, and while I'm probably not going to finish reading every chapter of every book, I know I need to 1) read some of every one and all of many of them and 2) not let the books pile up to become a dreaded project at the end of the year. On top of that the latest Bren Cameron book by C.J. Cherryh is in house and I'm not going to let that slip until next year, either.

Well, it's looking a lot like Boskone weather, anyway.

Looks like:

Tomorrow after 6 A.M.:
Snow. Near blizzard conditions with areas of blowing and drifting snow. A chance of thunderstorms...sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon. Snow and sleet accumulation of 4 to 8 inches. Blustery with highs in the lower 20s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph...increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent. Wind chill values as low as 9 below in the morning.
Wednesday Night
Snow...a chance of thunderstorms and freezing rain in the evening...then snow after midnight. Near blizzard conditions with areas of blowing and drifting snow. Additional accumulation of 3 to 5 inches...

OK, so that means 7 to 13 inches, with blowing, and some sleet and freezing rain in the mix. That's mean weather. It'll be pretty, I'm sure.

Today I refilled all of the bird feeders to the very top, charged the laptop, checked the general issue battery pack (that can drive laptops for about twelve hours if it needs to), charged the cellphone, put the recyclables into the outside bin, emptied the kitchen trash (to the outside bin), made extra ice cubes and made sure the extra blue-freezie is in the freezer, made up flyers that I'll likely Fedex tomorrow to our Boskone hotel room, wrote an article for the local newspaper... and asked Rolanni to bring home a quiche and a frozen pizza. I also briefly checked in to Second Life to make sure the ghost avatar problem was fixed (hey, there's a mystery title: "Elan Neruda and the Ghost Avatars of Chatrez...)and did some minor housekeeping things.

Oh yeah, I also made sure the fire was laid (but not lit) in the basement woodstove. Before I can use it I'd need to move the monitors off the top and the banker's box away from the side, but that's doable on short notice.
