We're not having bad weather --

it was a three cat night, with temps into the 20s last night. Left the window open for ventilation...

not a tornado in sight, no flood in the basement or streets, just a suddenly cool Maine spring after am unseasonal warming spell. Frost this morning, yes, but it'll burn off before I need to scrape the windshield. My fault, this is, i guess -- last week i put the snow shovels away. For those suffering from the weather's capriciousness, my condolences.  At 5:55 wind was from the NE at 2 mph, most recent gust was 5 mph, decidedly unlike the weekend where we were running with gusts in the 20 to  30 mph. As the sun comes up, I expect a better breeze.

Over on  Sharon's LJ she's posted information about the closet clearing project, and Partners In Necessity still in the cross-hairs. Bibliogeeks may be interested in knowing that if they have a PIN bound in black with gold lettering on the spine beneath their paper cover ... well, see
http://rolanni.livejournal.com/ ...

And, the question of what's real and what's not comes up again: do you own your Second Life, or is it a service?

Catch you all later.

Wow, I like that. The Search For Blue Octember ...
maybe SRM should to a chapbook on that... sounds like 13 stories, each between 999 and 1299 words long (on my OpenOffice.org wordcount), on The Search for Blue Octember.... might be able to afford that at 3 cents a word ... Hmmmmm. No, wait .. someone go check this year's minimum SFWA payment for short stories..... Like I need another project for this year. So Ok... if you're interested, let me know... maybe we can do it anyway... Oh, oh, might need a co-editor or guest editor.... I think I'm getting something here .. I see, that's 'cause the coffee just got delivered... Seriously, this may be done. A Halloween release date....whoa, I like it.

Meanwhile in Second Life Librarian Pam Ribble has shared a YouTube link of potential interest to Librarians, writers, artists (have you ever created *your* own avatar? Or your own skyscraper?), the general public, and Friends of Liad ... this is a kind of fuzzy video tour of the expanded Second Life Library. SF writers you may have heard of who are mentioned in the tour include Kurt Vonnegut, Neal Stephenson, and Sharon Lee and Steve Miller .... For those of you who like to see raw links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8v3TZethQ0

If you're interested, talk here or send me email. Like to see more -- visit Second Life and search on Friends of Liad in the general search engine ... we've got several bookstores -- and a park -- you can visit, and then there's Chatrez -- that's the island built by members of The Friends of Liad. Oh, also, if you do *join* Second Life, please feel free to tell them Elan Neruda or Kit Jimenez sent you. Yes, that does help us pay the virtual rent over there.

And in Other News -- the clerk at a local PO realized that on my second trip yesterday we'd pushed the total package postage for the day somewhat over $500; in fact, altogether this week we've shipped out most of a hundred Hellsparks and lots and lots of other book and chapbook orders that had been waiting for packaging. The goal is to have all the (non-pre-order) orders through 7:00 AM this morning out to the PO by 11:30 AM today. Soon as I finish here I go pack some more... if you're waiting for an order it really out to be there RSN.

Oh right, did I mention that a quick eyeball of the stock seems to show we've got about a dozen more copies of Hellspark left and about two dozen copies of the Liaden Universe Companion, Volume One left... I *do so* intend to get something up one eBay later today, something retrieved from the inner warehouse of the nearly late, nearly great Meisha Merlin publishing empire itself ... perhaps an I Dare or ... heck, we'll see what we have after I get back from the PO.

Be well, be busy, be happy.

For one thing, the Second Life Book Fair is nearly upon us...

and SRM Publisher (following link ought only work if you have Second Life installed...) has a fancy booth that 's ready for visitors there ... if you're into virtual worlds, please come on by! If you'd like to share that link with someone in plain text .... http://slurl.com/secondlife/Wallaby/208/49/53/

... if you're a Friend of Liad, a member of Science Fiction Rangers, or have other sfictional connections in SL come on by -- we may need folks to help stand around and look busy! You can volunteer to me (elan neruda in world) or to Shawna Montgomery for particular hours, too.

Also the link for the Hellspark order page ought to be working now...

And now off to other excitements!

Among the other excitements

New and Improved Version 2.2

To begin with, I went to chess for the first time in a few weeks on Monday and discover the tournament over, and me with only two wins. I usually do much better than this, and one year I came home as Club Champion.... Well, next year looms, I guess. On the other hand, in Monday night play I drew Vaughn and beat Mark one with only a small group on hand. If you're anywhere around Waterville or Central Maine and want to get some Monday night chess in, do let me know...

And yes, I have been a little quieter than usual. Part of that is that stuff goes on behind the scenes -- that's usual, right? -- and part is/was recovering/getting re-oriented after Boskone. Yes I missed getting to a com for all those months and now I miss having one on a schedule for March. I also note that we're hardly scheduled at all for 2008 yet -- hey, tell your con committees that we're nearly wide open next year! So far we're scheduled for WorldCon in 2008....

Meanwhile, part of the busy has been the prep work for this:

Electric Words: Baen ebook and independent podcast authors Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are known around the world for paper editions of their science fiction. The writers will appear at Second Life Library at Noon PST Sunday March 11 to discuss the whys behind their first, second, and third forays into electronic media, and how demand has changed since they started publishing BPLAN Virtuals Disk- Top ebooks in the late 1980s.

If you're a Liaden Universe fan and not familiar with Second Life, here's a reason to visit... and if you do visit and decide to join, please feel free to mention Elan Neruda (my in-world nick) ... because doing so gives us extra stuff in the game.

Other things going on in SL -- we've sold off about half of the original holdings in Clay since much of the need for prims has been reduced now that Chatrez exists and the Friends of Liad and Science Fiction Rangers meet and have places there, as do several other writers and creative types. We may reduce the Clay area bit more since Chatrez is a genuine Friends of Liad based Island and we often go there to visit and rest, but I think SRM Publisher still will maintain the rest of the land so we have a mainland visibility. If you come to visit SL to consider joining Science Fiction Rangers -- Shawna does a great job of letting the Rangers know when sci-fictional events are going on in-world, and she also arranges some for the Rangers...

On this side of the cyber-divide, the final Nebula Ballot is up... and I was a bit disappointed for several reasons to see that SRM Publisher author Mark Tiedemann's Remains did not make the final ballot. Mark has been nominated for a number of awards over the years and it would be good if he'd had a shot at the top this year. If you're not familiar with his work, look for Remains on the bookstore shelf or take advantage of our SRM chapbooks or the three pack we sell on our pages to discover his work for yourself.

Meanwhile, enough avoiding of Fledgling, chapter 7. Catch you soon.

After yet another morning of driving around in RL, I've been spending some time this afternoon in SL looking at the submissions for the science fiction photo contest... interesting. The actual judging has started i guess, since every time I stop by the gallery I drop one out of my mental "Best In Show" list...

IN RL I see Locus Online mentions us in their New and Notable/ New in Paperback listing today... that is, they list Balance of Trade's Ace edition. Cool.

More later...

I want to mention that after I re-read my post yesterday I realized how .... familiar and even comfortable... the act of doing a voice broadcast from the house felt.

Not only have we done many online chats and IRC sessions over the years, but we've also been on radio together a number of times, (and TV a couple) and there's a similar sense of dislocation from being in the same "place" in the metaverse while sitting twenty feet apart, with walls between.

This might be because we most often do morning radio gigs, where it's not unusual for the "morning crew" to be sitting in different studios while giving the on-air semblance of sitting side by side and even sometimes swatting each other with a newspaper or some such...and some of the rock stations we've done "meet the sci-fi guys on Halloween" type gigs for were in converted houses with studios spread over three floors....

On top of that was the late-night low-power talk radio gig Rolanni did for some months in the middling-late 80s, where she reported mentally placing certain of the names on the computer screen as being "at the table under the fake palm tree to the left" and someone else obviously just plain sitting at the bar with the bottle open..." ... and when I joined her in studio and saw the names popping up on the big computer screen I immediately saw what she meant.

So having the on-screen chance to see names over faces is something of a melding of all those IRCs, radio shows, and even the unreality of TV preparation with the convention experience of having people sitting with nearly unreadable namecards side by side on a panel (the name cards ought also to face sideways so you can remember the name of the person you've just met and are supposed to be bantering with in front of a worldcon audience....

As as been pointed out by others: if you start making a career out of writing, expect to have to talk about it a lot.

Due to requests in various threads and email, I'm asked to talk about the Friends of Liad Park meeting in Second Life on Sunday.

It was quiet; and that was my fault, because I didn't mention the idea until quite late. Still, we averaged about three people at any one time, and -- perhaps oddly -- a number of folks showed up after the expected ending time. We also ended up with several people stopping by during the day on Monday, and later Monday evening.

Mostly we all showed off. Some showed off dragons perched on shoulders, others had adventures with dragons afterwards. We eventually managed to get a working copy of our first snippet selection -- that'd be snippets from Changeling -- available for reading at the FoL park bandstand/pavilion; as time goes on we expect to have snippets from most of our chapbooks and books in a readable-in-Second-Life format, available for Friends of Liad members at the park and also at Nifty Snippets, where we expect to make them available to the general SL populace for the princely sum of 1 Linden (amounting to about 1/3 cent, US, I suspect.)

We also shared some of the places we visit, practiced teleporting, practiced building things (please don't make it a habit to build things in the park, go to a sandbox...)and sat around and chatted about things in SL and RL. Rolanni was in writing form so she stopped in and out dress as Kit depending on her muse, Dulsey, and how hard I was laughing....

Once in Second Life there are several ways to find Friends of Liad Park. One is to use the "Find" tab at the (bottom center) of the Second Life screen and then select "All" on the right side at the top... to get a small window where you should have success with any of a number of searches. For example, Friends of Liad Park tends bring up a short list from which you can select the park and then teleport in. You can also use the "places" tab for similar results, and simply typing "science fiction" into "places" or "all" will also give the option of selecting the park. I will note that at last test "scifi" was not a valid search string for the FoL or FoL park!

We now have around 13 members of Friends of Liad (that's signed in as members in Second Life) and a smaller number signed up for ElseCon. My first attempt to start a group for folks with beards (and people in favor of folks with beards) was not successful, but I may try again, in time...

The park at this point (which is in the region named Clay, you can teleport directly to 9,230,130) consists of some "mature flat land", a couple of benches (donated by Kit Jimenez) and a pavilion with various SF related books in it. There's a Tree-and-Dragon sign on the wall of the house next door -- and on the roof of that house is a cube looking a lot like the cover of Crystal Dragon. I hope to be adding a small pond; if I can that will make it a very musical place since we already have a windchime. I'm also looking into affording a welcome robot for the park. Depending on interest level it's possible that the house next door could be removed, or if someone's *really* interested, the egyptian style home,mansion/temple perched more or less above the park is for sale and could be added to the property quite handily. We'd need to hold a bake sale or two to afford that, since it looks like the sale price would work out to about $170 or so in US$!...I've seen a couple of small outdoor stages with seating we could add, assuming we have enough "prims" available.

Oh yeah, if you get into Second Life you can also visit Second Childhood Carousel in Boreal (178,252,125, handily next to the still a-building Nifty Snippets shop. If Kit has time she can explain about the joys of the Independent State of Caledon and the clock shop there. As for me, as I type this the sound and image of the surf at Caledon waits beyond this text, and it's breakfast time.
