Liaden Universe ® InfoDump Number 97
FIVE AT ONE BLOW
Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are pleased to announce that they they have, through the offices of their agent, Jennifer Jackson of the Maass Agency, sold *five* Liaden Universe® novels to Toni Weisskopf, at Baen.  These five books will finish out the combined Theo Waitley/Agent of Change storylines.  Delivery dates (NOT publication dates) are from mid-2013 through mid-2016; titles are not yet known.
REGARDING SIGNED COPIES OF DRAGON SHIP

There was error at the bindery which resulted in some signed sheets being bound into the wrong edition (by which we mean wrong-ISBN, since the signed and unsigned editions bear two distinct ISBNs) of Dragon Ship.  This has, as you may well imagine, Caused Some Problems.  The quickest to recover is Don Blyly, who, now in receipt of Simon and Schuster's fix, is, after a hiatus of a day or two, continuing to ship pre-ordered books.  He lets us know that he has another 100/150 unspoken for signed editions, so if Amazon has given you a November ship date, or has cancelled your order --  contact Uncle Hugo (http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/index.shtml)

REGARDING SIGNED COPIES OF NECESSITY'S CHILD, THE BOOK FORMERLY KNOWN AS GEORGE

Uncle Hugo's is now accepting pre-orders, here:  http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/ah-lee-miller.php

In light of the snafu with the Dragon Ship signed copies and the rapid professionalism with which Uncle Hugo's dealt with the situation (in direct opposition to Amazon's continuing lack of customer service), we strongly recommend that you consider pre-ordering a signed copy of Necessity's Child from Uncle.

LIADEN AUDIO BOOK REMINDER

Fifteen Liaden novels (aka all of them), divided into four Sequences are now available from Audible.com.  For those who may wish to sample the material, or the narrator, or both, before purchase, Audible has generously provided a free hour sample of the first book in each of the four Sequences.  Handy links:  right here  (http://www.pinbeambooks.com/audiobooks)

Also, Steve and Sharon interviewed the narrators.  Those interviews are posted here, (http://www.korval.com) and are another way to get to know the narrators.

P.S.  We have heard from Mr. Feldberg at Audible that he does intend to acquire audiobook rights to Necessity's Child, publication date February 2013.

QR CODES TO USE AND SHARE

In lieu of a series of flyers, each aimed at a single particular book or series of releases we've created ashort term all purpose flyer  (http://www.starswarmnews.com/holdit/lee&millerflyersept2012.pdfyou can print out and take with you -- or point to on the web -- when you want to share information about current Liaden interest and Lee & Miller material. We've used the QR-codes an well as URLs in the flyer since so many people carry their phones at all times and can just "point and shoot"  from the flyer or even from your computer screen and from some tablets and phones as well. Ebooks, audiobooks, splinters .. all should be covered on on flyer.  If the QR code approach is popular we'll work them into single flyers down the road.

NEW SPLINTER

There's a new splinter/story bearing on the Archers Beach universe at Splinter Universe! (http://splinteruniverse.com/?page_id=548)  If you like the story, or the site, please consider hitting the Paypal button at the bottom of the page.

PUBLICATION SCHEDULE

Necessity's Child (the book formerly known as George), February 2013

WATCH THE SKIES.
The eARC for Necessity's Child will be available for download in the format of your choice from Baen Ebooks  ( http://www.baenebooks.com/ )  "sometime around late October—mid November."
eArcs are "electronic advance reading copies."   They are basically unedited, and as such will certainly contain errors of grammar and spelling, with the occasional continuity error.  They are offered by Baen, at a premium, price, for those readers who must know what happens next, NOW.

InfoDump and Holiday Message

Dear Friends and Readers,

Thank you all for receiving this extra long 93rd edition of the Liaden Universe® InfoDump, and special thanks to the hundred or so of you who have been with the InfoDump from Number One. Who knew when we started this little electronic newsletter well over a dozen years ago that it would still be going strong here in the second decade of the 21st century?

We’d like to take a moment more of your time, if we may, to reflect on 2011, which has been a very active year for us (and continues active, as we work to finish Dragon Ship, which is due RSN at Baen Intergalactic Headquarters in North Carolina). It been a very expensive year, and a very rewarding year; a year of decision.

Historically — in fact, since 1995 — we’d be busy at this time of year with SRM Publisher chapbooks, either sorting pre-orders or packing books. This year — this year of decision — there is no Yule chapbook to send out. We’re sorry for that. The Yule chapbook was a connection between us and you, our readers. Like sending cards to family. Yes, the mailing was a big project at a particularly busy time of year, but we miss it, and we hope you’re all well. . .as well as can be, in these uncertain times.

The decision to close down SRM Publisher wasn’t an easy one, but it was necessary. We need to concentrate on writing, and on staying healthy.

Part of the expense of this year, this 2011, was paid from Steve’s health. He was out of circulation for a number of months, with pneumonia, cardiac issues, an ICD implant…followed by rehab, and the fun game of Getting to Know Your Meds. Among it all, we lost Hexapuma, whose exploits many of you followed through Sharon’s blog, to kidney failure — and the year hasn’t exactly been easy on anybody, in terms of friends and colleagues lost.

Despite all that, Skyblaze, the 17th Adventure in the Liaden Universe(R) was written and mailed, we started a new online project in Splinter Universe, put many of our works into ebook format, did a TV interview. . .and traveled to Reno for WorldCon, where we saw so many of you! Dozens of you at once, in fact, at the wonderful Friends of Liad breakfast, which had more attendees then the first WorldCon. On the way home, we swung by Uncle Hugo’s in Minneapolis, where we signed and personalized hundreds of copies of Ghost Ship; met and talked to quite a few more of you. We were also Guests of Honor at a couple of regional conventions, where we talked to even more of you.

By that measure, then — the measure of connecting with our readers, making reasonable decisions for future health, and pursuing our long-term goal of living the writing life — 2011 has been a good year.

Thank you for helping make it so, for us. And we hope that we have, insofar as telling stories can, made your year more worthwhile, too.

A blessed Yule, a Merry Christmas, and a better New Year, to us all!

Steve and Sharon

GHOST SHIP SELL OUT

We wrote to you at the end of October to let you know that Ghost Ship has sold out. Which means, in the publishing world, that there are no copies left in the Simon and Schuster warehouse. There are still copies in stores — both indie stores and big-box — and in some superstore warehouses. As of this writing, Amazon.com has sold through the stock in its warehouse and has no more Ghost Ships to sell. Barnes and Noble still appears to have stock. Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore in Minneapolis still has SIGNED copies of Ghost Ship on hand.

Long story short, if you want to give a copy of the hardcover edition of Ghost Ship to someone, or you want a(nother) copy for yourself, now is the time to buy.

The mass market edition of Ghost Ship will be published by Baen in late July/early August 2012

COMING SOON TO A BOOKSTORE NEAR YOU

GENERAL NOTE RE SKYBLAZE AND OTHER SCHEDULES

Steve's cardiomyopathy, diagnosed while he was hospitalized in October for pneumonia, resulted in drug therapy, tests, and monitoring in November and December; in mid-January he an AICD/defibrillator implant to bolster the drug therapies. That procedure and resultant medical limitations (like not being able to lift more than 5 lbs for more than six weeks!) have slowed the production of Skyblaze, which is at the printer being readied now. Steve should be able to begin packing around March 7, about 1 month behind schedule. If you have yet to preorder this chapbook you may still use the pre-order page (ignore original closing date) -- this
page will be now be good through March 1, 2011. http://www.korval.com/skyblaze/

UPCOMING FREE STORY FOR BAEN WEBSITE

That's right, a free Liaden story is due to hit the revitalized Baen homepage at http://baen.com/ come June. Titled "Intelligent Design," the Lee and Miller story deals with. . .well -- hold on until June and read it, so you can see what it is about. In the meantime, be sure to go over to www.baen.com and check out the stories by other Baen authors.

LAKE REGION TV

Sharon and Steve interviewed for Western Maine's cable TV system's program "What Are You Reading" on Saturday, February 19. We'll let you know when -- and where -- in March the show will appear and how to order copies of the interview once it does appear.

Omnibus One: Local Custom, Scout's Progress, Conflict of Honors
Omnibus Two: Agent of Change, Carpe Diem
Omnibus Three: Plan B, I Dare
Omnibus Four: Crystal Soldier, Crystal Dragon, Balance of Trade

When we have dates and other information, we'll let you know.

LEE AND MILLER SET FOR WORLDCON
Liaden Universe® authors Sharon Lee and Steve Miller will be appearing at Anticipation, WorldCon 67, in Montreal, Canada
starting later this week. The authors are scheduled for readings, signings, panels, a Friends of Liad breakfast, and general

FLEDGLING
Amazon.com has begun soliciting reviews for Fledgling, which is officially due out in September; expect some copies to surface in bookstores and
conventions before then. Watch the skies, Theo is on her way!

DOUBLE VISION SHIPPING NOW
Double Vision, the new 298 page collection of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's work outside the Liaden Universe®, is shipping now.
With some stories dating to 1976 Double Vision is a great way to see the early individual work as well as the start of the collaboration
that led to the Liaden experience. Available from select genreshops and convention dealers as well as from the SRM Publisher
website at http://www.srmpublisher.com. See WORLDCON WOW, below

MISFITS
The Liaden Universe novella MISFITS, previously avialable only electronically from Jim Baen's Universe, will be coming out in
paper format from SRM Publisher Ltd. in September, 2009. Subscriptions are available online. See WORLDCON WOW, below.

WORLDCON WOW
SRM Publisher will have a presentation at Worldcon, but no sales table. Since so many Lee & Miller readers aren't able to
come to the presentation to pick up the discount coupon postcards Steve will be handing out, we'll share the 20% off

warehouse wranglers, office staff, and packing crew -- will be at worldcon, there will be a break in shipping new orders until
August 15. That secret code is "Worldcon Wow" and that's good for the entire SRM PUblisher catalog, though quantities of some items
may be limited to available stock. "Worldcon Wow" is the code, got that? Twenty percent off as a show special. Yes! The coupon special
runs until August 15. Worldcon Wow.

20 Years and counting: Happy anniversary to Val Con and Miri!
We'd like to ask you to help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Liaden Universe®, as brought to the world through Agent of Change from Del Rey. This 247 page book changed the world for some of us (notably Sharon Lee and Steve Miller!) but also started a long-and-winding path that so far includes a couple million words of Liaden fiction, closets full of fading t-shirts and work shirts, an audio book, a serial podcast, silver pins, some good and some not so good buttons, some great book covers, avatars and islands in Second Life, and readers around the world, reading books and stories in multiple languages.

So far this year we're planning:

BOSKONE hook-up ....
As usual when we're not being guests elsewhere, we'll be at Boskone (that's in Boston) ... this year that dates are February 15 -17 and David Weber is Guest of Honor. We're both set to be on the program, but we're not sure what we'll be doing yet, though there will be a Liaden 20th Anniversary event of some kind. See http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/

We're hoping for a Friends of Liad breakfast, and we expect to debut the new mass-market-sized edition of Liaden Universe(r) Companion Volume 1 as well, with the assistance of Pandemonium Books. The con committee has helped us snag a suite for a party, details TBD. If anyone's interested in helping with/occupying such a party suite, please let us know.

A trip to Denver ...for the WORLDCON NAMED DENVENTION ... here we've also asked for suite information. Anyone want to go? Anyone want to help with a suite? We've got the time blocked out, the trip planned, and we're setting up a visit to a couple of carousels along the way.
Details at http://www.denvention3.org/

A trip to ALBACON in October, Albany, New York, USA .. where long-time Liaden fan, first reader, and general nice lady Anne McCaffrey is GoH, along with her co-author and son, Todd. We're not sure what we'll be doing there besides being there. I note that if you're close to Albany and would like to get involved, the committee has openings for everything from gophers to department heads. Details: http://www.albacon.org/

Dragon Tide
Due to some unfortunate planning on Steve's part (sigh), Dragon Tide was delayed until after Christmas -- next time he'll read the email from the printer that says "Renovations coming in December." Dragon Tide is now literally in house, and the first 225 copies signed. We only have another equal amount to sign and then Steve starts packing and shipping. The first of those pre-ordered chapbooks should be reaching readers by Saturday, January 19. Watch the skies.

Speaking of Renovations...
Our web presence is changing. Not only is the SRM Publisher catalog moving to a new location but we're working on things behind the scenes for the general Liaden website on korval.com. This will be the first attempt at a complete site rebuild since 1995 or 1998(!) so features may come and go for awhile. Both the catalog and the Liaden page side of things may experience interruptions during these rebuilds. Please be patient.

News: Theo Waitley Flies Again -- Saltation
Check here for info: http://www.korval.com/saltation/Theoconnect.html
anytime, but know that starting January 21, around noon Eastern Time, we'll post the first installment of the nearly weekly Theo Waitley novel, Saltation. We're not going to give an exact schedule this time -- because it was a very difficult thing to keep up with.

We will use most of the same arrangements as Fledgling, basically planning one installment a week until the story is done near the end of the year, assuming reader support warrants. We're shooting for a world count of around 111,111 words; we note that various word processors give different word counts for the same body of text.

We're not going to attempt to predict a chapter count this time -- we learn by doing. Saltation will have a pay button that should go live about the time the first installment is posted. We are still accepting donations toward Fledgling; please do not combine Fledgling and Saltation donations: our accountant hates that!

To visit Fledgling, now complete in rough draft, see _http://www.korval.com/fledgling/_
