We stopped yesterday and picked up a couple bags of birdseed ... and today we've got birds. Grackles, red wings, cardinals (Mr. and Mrs.) doves, chickadees, titmice, sparrows ... it helps that we've also had a foot or so of very heavy wet snow and we've been lucky that the winds haven't taken the power lines with them so far. it is still snowing as i type ...
it is a good thing we don't plan to go out RSN ... since there's a wall of sense wet snow at the end of the driveway that we'll let out plowguy take care of, assuming he;s coming by. Not for *me* to handshovel, nossir.
Given a snow day ... I played in the dough and made some rolls. This dough is not quite working out the way we hoped yet -- while it is providing s nice tasty food, it isn't rising properly for us, so it is unusable in the sandwich mode. Sigh, I guess, and sigh again.
Also, the snow means we didn't take the 70 packed Skyblaze out to the PO. Monday and Tuessday ought to see most of the rest off.

2011-04-01 21:20 (UTC)I read about this on Rollani's LJ, so tried the recipe before buying the book. Inadvertently poured part of the water on the counter instead of into the dough so got a very dense bread from it. Is ok, I like dense bread, but it's also quite yeasty tasting. I came away from this maiden baking voyage convinced that the recipe is pretty idiot proof; a good thing around here, where idiocy seems to strike in random frequencies.
Great job on the Skyblazes. And good to hear from you.

2011-04-01 23:51 (UTC)My husband went through a baking phase. He's the kind that makes something once according to the recipe, then just throws cabinets open, grabs items at random, and magic happens. He made a very dark, very rich bread once, that had all sorts of wonderful flavor and depth. Unfortunately, one of the items he grabbed at random was cloves, and his hand slipped. That overwhelming flavor drowned out some of the more subtle spices. I must confess that there was alcohol involved...
Also unfortunately, probably also because of the pickled baker, there is no record of the ingredients, so we'll probably never see that particular bread again. Most art is ephemeral; this was just more ephemeral than most :o)
