More on the always expect a train theme:

Truck hits train and  "The driver was cited for failing to use due care by NHP. "

http://www.mynews4.com/story.php?id=27853&n=122

This was the first report I saw,. I note that the report is pretty bareboned; but I gather from the location that the train in question was a California Zephyr ... but I looked for more and found:

http://www.masslive.com/newsflash/index.ssf/story/accident-involves-amtrak-train-in-churchill-county/3f9c5ebcdff84188ae1d2217e1f07c64

My understanding is that this was the westbound California Zephyr due to arrive in Reno at 8:30 yesterday morning and it was struck by a southbound semi -- which, looking at the road and track configuration there -- had been probably traveling in tandem with the train for some miles...

We expect to travel to Reno by California Zephyr next year -- all your truckers stay smart!

Tangent -- I just poked at the BangPop web page and they still don't even give the hours of the song-and-dance, much less any schedule. When are you guys supposed to be there?

We have to be there early for set up; I'm thinking the chair is trying to make up for some glaring communications problems over the last few months by someone in committee -- we'll go and just see what happens ...

I can't even find mention of when the show opens. Nothing in today's paper . . .

It looks to me as though he was either driving too fast or didn't notice a dirty great train in the way until it was too late. Either way he deserves to be charged, it was just lucky that no one was hurt.

I have a feeling he was coming down the road, was used to seeing the train sort of right there, and then when the road/track varied, he wasn't expecting it... long night of driving, shadows on the road, etc ... but still...
I'd worked with two people (while paying my way through college) who later died by running at speed into the side of a train that was using a very rarely used grade crossing. Guess everyone was lucky in the Nevada incident.

I've been on the Zephyr on it's trip to Sacramento. The scenery is wonderful. Make sure you are in the sight-seeing car (lounge) on the way up and down the Rockies and have your camera handy. It's a trip I would love to repeat.

Thanks for the pointers. We've got some idea already -- this will be perhaps our 8th or 10th trip on the route, but I think the times of travel have changed somewhat since our first trip out back in the dark ages before Agent of Change hit the stands. That train was all what they called "legacy equipment" so the modern trip is much more comfortable, you betcha! There are some part of the trip we leave the books in the suitcase, that's for sure!
