Ticky box alert! Poll on Best Liaden novel ever: http://rolanni.livejournal.com/541254.html Ticky box alert! Tell your friends!

Seriously -- I tweeted the above to all 24 or 25 of my followers, but that won't go far, so you can help, especially if you're on LJ or Baen's bar or a mailing list, or even off in rec.arts.sf.written ...  If you're on other groups that talk about Liaden stuff, let them know about this poll if you would.
Not only is there a ticky box part, but there's an essay portion if you're so inclined!

Thanks from both of us!

ps .. still taking advice on yesterday's question, still hoping to get to chess tonight

pps ... we got no snow to speak of -- how's by you?
kinzel: (srm)
Section One --

Among the questions we are most frequently asked at conventions and in email is -- "Where is the best place for me to buy your book -- for you as an author?"

The answer is: yes. Buy my book.

Now, it is true that we do not get a cut of used book sales, so we'd prefer new sales to used -- but if you can't afford to buy a new book we'd rather you read our books than not.  Historically we've had a lot of support from genre shops -- you'll see us name quite a few over time, especially appended to our Liaden Universe(R) Infodumps -- so go to your local independent store or genre shop and ask for our books there. You can even tell them all about our books if they don't already know.  This week coming, if you're close enough to do it comfortably -- you can buy our books at Children's Book Cellar in Waterville, ME -- where we will be reading and signing on Friday afternoon into the evening.  But really, in general, the answer is yes. Convention dealers may cost you more than Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com .. but in theory we should be getting the same royalty for a sale, either way. it may take us longer to get the royalty for some places than others -- but please, that's not really your concern as a supportive reader. The other hand is that as writers we've also had far more success with amazon than a lot of folks, in part because when we'd been out of print for so long many of the "regular" bookstores forgot about us while Amazon.com had a clear record -- people were buying our books new and used when they could find them ... and when Plan B came out and ran to #42 on the Amazon list one Sunday a few years back, they took note -- in fact I think nearly half the first year's sales of Plan B were through Amazon.

For the moment -- you  can help by requesting Fledgling and by telling your friends about Fledgling -- this is effectively the start of the new story arc, and it would be good to get as many people onboard now as we can. Tell your library, tell your friends and local SF club, and do mention us to the folks standing beside you in the bookstore, yessir. Word of mouth can be the key. heck -- you can even mention Fledgling in your own blog, or on your facebook wall ... and if you are on facebook, look for the liaden interest groups!

Section Two --

I should point out that we do have some of our books for sale at srmpublisher.com -- but not Fledgling or Saltation. In a few weeks we may find we have some "extra" copies of Fledgling leftover form our pre-order mailings, but watch for that news here or in Sharon's blog...but if you want other Lee & Miller stuff, be sure to visit http://www.srmpublisher.com, where sometime this week Misfits should be in stock.  Our printer is struggling with equipment and the chapbooks did NOT arrive last week as we expected.

Section Three --

Sometimes you have to read *something* that doesn't come from Lee & Miller. No, srsly!

So I see that Jim Hines has a new fantasy just out --   The Mermaid's Madness
http://www.amazon.com/Mermaids-Madness-PRINCESS-NOVELS/dp/0756405831/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254831251&sr=1-3

... and I'm not sure that you'll think of the Little Mermaid quite the same after you read it....

And so does the inimitable Laura Anne Gilman have a new fantasy --

http://www.amazon.com/Flesh-Fire-Book-One-Vineart/dp/1439101418/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254832441&sr=1-5

I have a special taste for Laura Anne's Flesh and Fire ... which deals with the magic of wine. Yessir!

Section Four --

About coming travels: no, we must skip Albacon this year -- we've got a reading and signing in Waterville on Friday evening and getting to
and from Albany takes 6 hours, so we'd have about 12 hours at the con on the weekend, plus gas bills... sorry folks.

After that, we're still not sure if Sharon will make Boskone in February, though I expect to ... again, the matter is travel time. If Sharon can finagle an extra Friday off... maybe. If not, the next time we'll travel together to a con may well be Oasis, where we'll be Guests of Honor in May in Orlando, and then to Duckon, where we'll be in June in Naperville. I note that Scott Raun, long tiome Friend of Liad, is Fan Guest of Honor at Duckon, so we're hoping for a good turnout of the mid-country Friends of Liad ... For that matter, we'll see if the Deep South Friends of Liad who've been after us for years to come their way think Florida is *too south* for them ... please understand that Sharon uses up her vacation time from the college to travel to these cons so that her "vacation" next year will consist of two Guest of Honor gigs and a visit to Raleigh for NASFIC -- so having our long time readers and supporters show up in force to join us at breakfast and help us party at night is really useful in terms of our relaxing.

Section Five --

See above re travel. Since we have to work out Sharon's absence from the college, if you know a convention thinking about us for a GoH slot for 2011, now is not too soon to discuss it seriously.  We expect to get to Renovation, (Worldcon 2011 http://www.renovationsf.org/) so... think around that. Places we haven't been GoH include the pacific Northwest, Canada (yes, we did attend InConsequential, Anticipation, Torcon 3 and other nearby events), the lower Midwest ... and we haven't been GoH in California since the late 1980s. Yep, got to keep time in mind since we'll travel there by train for most places over a 10 or 15 hour drive, and to some closer.

Section Six ---
whoa, do something fun, right now -- this is far too long a post for a pretty morning like today!

We're pleased to announce that, as of this afternoon, we, through the good offices of our agent Jennifer Jackson, and Toni Weisskopf, Publisher, have closed the deal for the book that is, at once, the follow on to I Dare and the follow on to Saltation, working title: _Ghost Ship_. Our deadline is August of 2010; WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLICATION DATE YET

Liaden Universe InfoDump # 79

YULE CHAPBOOK 2009 -- YOU'VE BEEN ASKING ABOUT THIS

Adventures in the Liaden Universe #16 is coming in November. This year's
Yule chapbook will contain two new stories by Lee and Miller, "Moon on
the Hills," and "Hidden Resources." The book itself will be titled
Halfling Moon, and yes, both stories deal with Clan Korval, after Liad.
Halfling Moon will be $11 (don't forget postage if you send a check) --
and you can pre-order it NOW through the SRM Publisher catalog website:
srmpublisher.com.

PRE-SUPPORTERS OF FLEDGLING TAKE NOTE!

Those who donated $25 or more toward the Fledgling online project and
are therefore eligible to receive a thank-you book from the authors: we
expect to have the first 600 books in the mail by October 1 -- and the
rest will follow as soon after as possible. Books in the US are being
shipped via media mail, which can take 7-10 days; so please be patient.
We're also having to confirm some addresses by email and some even by
*snail mail* since many of you have moved in the last two years and your
new addresses haven't reached us. We are mailing as rapidly as we can,
but are taking several days to do other essential SRM Publisher and Lee
& Miller business (like MISFITS, see below, and writing introductions
and the like for the upcoming Baen omnibus editions) so this may take
awhile.

*MISFITS*

The paper format Liaden Universe(R) novella MISFITS -- Adventures in the
Liaden Universe #15 -- should be arriving at SRM Publisher's world
headquarters for shipping by October 3. Given the space problems caused
by having both Fledgling and Misfits mailing work going on at the same
time we ask for patience if your book order does not arrive this week.
If you have not ordered yet, they are available online, at our SRM
catalog online and will soon be available from the regular genre outlets
as well.

LYTAXIN IRREGULARS BOOKSTORE UPDATE

The "street date" for _Fledgling_ was September 8, and Theo is getting
read everywhere -- everywhere, that is, except those places that haven't
ordered a copy in. If your local Barnes and Noble doesn't have a copy,
you can ask for it. In fact, please do: go to the customer information
desk and request that _Fledgling_ by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller,
*ISBN-10:* 1439132879/*ISBN-13:* 978-1439132876 be stocked.

That's all. You don't have to buy the book. All you have to do is
request that it be stocked.

To those who choose to take up this bold challenge: We thank you most
sincerely for your aid. We've seen photos of Fledgling in several
different B&N stores, and we personally signed copies on a driveby at
our local store. It CAN happen. You can help!

FRIENDS OF LIAD AT NASFIC IN 2010

Several dozen Friends of Liad found each other for breakfast at WorldCon
in Montreal, and we met a few individually for dinner as time permitted,
this despite the fact that there was no central place for Friends of
Liad to meet -- no fan table, no Liaden Lounge, not even a publisher's
table to act as a central news and meeting spot for FoL. Since Fledglng
will be eligible for next year's Hugo Awards (in theory, anyway!) and
both _Fledgling_ and _Saltation_ will be out, with _Mouse and Dragon_ on
the way -- and with potential dates and news for the reissue of the
first 10 novels as well! -- we'd like to facilitate FoL events at
ReConStruction (http://www.reconstructionsf.org/ ) if we can. In
addition to the long-standing Friends of Liad mailing list we've now set
up an address for people wanting to volunteer or share ideas with us
directly about events for conventions (like NASFIC, Oasis, and DuckCon)
that we'll be attending. That address is fol@korval.com ... and we'll
see what we can do to get potential FoL events in gear.

PODCAST INTERVIEW: LEE AND MILLER AND THE SACREMENTO BOOK REVIEW

WATCH THE SKIES: NEW EBAY AUCTION
For those who have been following the fate of the contents of Sharon's
file drawer, the ephemera associated with _Agent of Change_ and with
_Conflict of Honors_ were auctioned off in July, and Carpe Diem went in
August. Now, a shorter story rarity, as seen in Pulp House. many moons ago.

As a reminder, this is what will be on offer:

*Candlelight*
1. Original typescript, hand corrected by authors, dated July 1984
2. Submission typescript
3. Carbon copy of submission letter to Good Housekeeping
4. Several rejection letters (including Good Housekeeping)
5. Another copy, with hand-written revisions
6. Intent-to-publish letter from Pulphouse, signed by Dean Wesley Smith,
receive date noted in Sharon's hand as October 1992

*OTHER TRAVEL NEWS*
Steve Miller and Sharon Lee will be literary Guests of Honor at the
following upcoming science fiction and fantasy conventions:

Oasis 23, May 28 -- 30, 2010, Orlando, Florida ( http://oasfis.org/oasis/ )
DucKon 19, June 18 -- 20, 2010, Naperville, Illinois (

Truck, truck, truck! Yep, late in the day, 1543.96 lbs worth of Fledgling arrived yesterday in Waterville; two full pallets, 60 cases of books. The truck driver handed them off case by case at the tailgate; I had to stack them in 15 stacks each 4 cases high and later cart them and restack them in the storage bin ... luckily it was a very nice day, and even better, the neighboring office was closed so the driver could get the 18 wheeler within 6 feet of the bay door, leaving me about a 60 foot round trip for each handcart run.

So what does that mean if you've ordered Fledgling? We're waiting for the shipping boxes. I'm testing a label printer today, and some new mailing software as well, and  .... and today is Sharon's birthday, and we have a reservation for the nicest Italian place in town tonight, so it'll be awhile before signing starts, much less shipping. This may take a week or two.
Please be patient!

Bestsellers in Books

Any Category > Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Adventure

So Fledgling comes in at #20 right now at Amazon in SF adventure, but if you winnow out the duplicates caused by Amazon breaking out
their Kindle editions, as a title Fledgling is around number 11 ... and Fledgling is currently #9 in Space Opera ... but would be #5 or 6 without amazon getting in our way ...

But hey, this is all fleeting, and changes by the hour.  You can ask you local bookseller to carry Fledgling  if they don't already; and certainly
your local genre shop should be well-stocked by now, or know when they are getting books in. Books-A-Million is showing stock online, Walmart is not (!) ...

Sing out if you see a copy of Fledgling in a store, or of you own or work for a store, if you have Fledgling in stock.

PS: we're going to be doing a podcast for a West coast group sometime next week -- I don't think it'll be live online, but we'll let you know as soon as we have details

kinzel: (Default)
First, Rolanni, aka Sharon, has posted a poll and there's still time to take part....

This is a poll for Liaden readers ... at http://rolanni.livejournal.com/464424.html -- please help if you have a few moments.

In other stuff, we have a  day lily count of three today.  Very near to the end of the season we are, yessir.
And, if you go to
http://www.simonandschuster.net/extras/pdfs/catalogs/Spring2010/Baen-Spring-10-seasonal-for-SandS.pdf

you can find the Baen catalog for next year, with a nifty PDF of Saltation ... suitable for sharing with friends, yep...
that's around page 5 of the pdf...

and at
http://www.simonandschuster.net/extras/pdfs/catalogs/Spring2010/Baen-Spring-10-seasonal-for-SandS.pdf
down around page 15, is the catalog featuring Fledgling ....

Hurricane rained on us slightly last night, but no tornadoes here, though there was one on Paris, and area I frequented when I was a sysop and trainer. -- http://www.wmtw.com/weather/20511186/detail.html

Those of you who follow the publishing adventures of Lee & Miller may recall a setback this
spring when Ace decided not to continue with the previously announced re-issue of the paperback versions, meaning many Liaden Universe® books were out of print schedule, if not out of print, yes.

But, as mentioned elsewhere on the overnight, agent Jennifer reports that Baen Books wants those books, which will appear in 4 volumes -- we have not all the details yet, nor the volume titles, but we do know that the volumes will be

Omnibus One: Local Custom, Scout's Progress, Conflict of Honors
Omnibus Two: Agent of Change, Carpe Diem
Omnibus Three: Plan B, I Dare
Omnibus Four: Crystal Soldier, Crystal Dragon, Balance of Trade

And that's some news, innit?

Also? Looks like the Amazon link for reviewing Fledgling may have gone live. Sometimes they *do* go live before publication only to be turned off until actual publication date. We shall see.
kinzel: (Lord Black Cat)
Well now ... over at rolanni's blog the discussion of possible auction items goes forward. That is, original Lee & Miller novel scripts  and associated material for Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, Carpe Diem  and etc ....

Not only would such an auction help us make space, it'd make eating at Worldcon a surer bet.  Visit http://rolanni.livejournal.com/ for details....

as previously mentioned, feel free to share these with friends and fans and the world at large.

Topic Two

I figure that (over time) we've signed close to 100,000 objects with our names on them -- books, chapbooks, bookmarks, postcards, shirts and t-shirts, audio-books, e-book samplers, mugs, convention programs, bar coasters, tote bags, manuscript and typescripts, and, and... and, a Pepsi can. We've signed these things at conventions in several countries and numerous states, and at libraries large and small, bookstores, our house in Maine, on trains, at our former rented townhouse in Maryland, restaurants, hotel bars, and at book talks to writing classes, and ... in a parking lot of a mall in New Hampshire during a cat exchange.

So,we're not against autographs, OK? Saying that, let me tell you that it is best for us if we have warning, especially if you would like books signed in your absence. I mention this because we regard it as really, really bad form for people to send us their treasured objects without warning, and without regard to what else we may be doing. Understand that we could be on the road for several weeks (it does happen) and your package might be returned without us seeing it. Consider that the address you have might be for an out-dated Post Office box ... and that, since you saved money by sending the treasures Media Mail, we'd have to pay postage just to find out what it is -- or we'd need to refuse it.

Please, email us if you think you want to do this -- and I'll tell you plainly, we have declined to do this in past because of scheduling and other issues. Do not assume it'll be OK, and don't just mail away. Please. Thank you.

Topic Three

we have seen the future ... at least an image of a book cover due out later -- and we hope to be able to show it off here RSN ... in fact, you can see a low rez version now. The book cover in question is for the upcoming German edition of Plan B, whats got itself a new name. You can follow this link to see it ...

OR SEE IT BIGGER:

Topic Four

It is a mizzily gray day. I ought not be tempted away from the computer for some time, so I'll say hello to Theo and Win Ton for you.

UPDATED for art's sake
kinzel: (Lord Black Cat)
I'm told people won't click on ordinary links ... by someone who should know. I'm told that people *will* click and watch if they see a tube thingie in front of them. How about that?

So: here's the first of the Buzzy Multimedia interview segments that you may not have watched yet, the rest will follow over time, tubed right on your screen here:

Do feel free to pass this on to friends, neighbors, librarians, science fiction fans and convention committees, comic and game geeks; also to grant and literary award groups, bookstore owners and workers, and maybe to publishers in France, Spain, Japan, China, and India; perhaps even to high school teachers and college creative writing professors, and folks from Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, the Maine Festival of the Book, and your favorite blogger. BTW -- if you fall into one of those groups above or forward this to someone in one of those groups above, please feel free to drop a note here, just because.

It used to be said that, when it came to PR, "ink is ink" and I wonder now if that's become "links is links?" Gah, is there a good way to say "tubes is tubes"?
kinzel: (conshot)
Time ... means something different to the folks at amazon.com. Really.

We've seen several different on-sale dates for Longeye in April (by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, if there was any doubt) ... and we find today that Amazon is apparently shipping the book, and this is March -- or has shipped it and needs more -- or .. .well, anyway, they are accepting reviews and folks are reporting that they're able to order it with nearterm delivery dates.

So, go thou and buy this book ... http://www.amazon.com/Longeye-Sharon-Lee/dp/1416591532
if you haven't already, and if you're on of those readers who hates to buy a book before knowing the next one is coming out --- this *is* the next one -- so buy this and Duainfey (which preceded it), both on sale at amazon and at your favorite genre shop or bookseller as well. Tell you friends to do the same thing .. .because it won't be long before we're pitching "next books" to Toni there at Baen, and it would be a *good thing* if these non-Liaden books showed strong so that the next Liaden contract(s) are well-supported.

Meanwhile, were you or someone you know at StellarCon? Got pictures of us there? We don't -- and we'd like to. True, we're waiting with bated breath for the Buzzy Multimedia interviews to get online, but before that happens, we'd still like some shots from the con if you have them to share.
kinzel: (Default)
There's a new link-to-me kid in town and somehow Sharon is making waves. The thing is, this start-up offers all the writers in the US and Canada a place to have a sort of web presence. And Sharon mentioned in in her blog, because, in part, she thought that such an innovation wasn't really needed -- but you see, you have to "claim" your page, if you're a writer, else someone else could, I gather.

I went to http://filedby.com/ and as I type I see that Sharon is currently listed as Most Viewed author, somewhat ahead of J.K. Rowling, Sara Nelson, and Stephanie Meyer. I don't see my name in the most viewed list -- but see, they don't seem to have a good way for co-authors to to sign in together.

by the way, Sharon's original blog post about this is ... http://rolanni.livejournal.com/411725.html

And away we go ...
kinzel: (catwhisker)
I'm off, but you knew that.

This morning I'll be in to the office early; I snarfed up a new printer (actually a multifunction thingie) on sale late last week and need to unpack and install it. Wish me luck -- I may end up having to put windows back on one of the office boxes or old laptops to make it run in the short term... boo, hiss.

Also on tap today, some cardboard box crushing, some packing and shipping, some ... some fun, eh? The morning is nippy but blue-skyed, so that's all good.

The cats have finally relaxed. They were quite nervous for a couple days after we got back from StellarCon but now are back to a routine which allows us a place to put our feet when we walk. Understand that when Hexapuma is doing the cat-underfoot he makes a formidable barrier, yes.

May check in from the office; we shall see.

Meanwhile several people have forwarded this and related articles to us. Thanks Kate, I think you were first, and this is the most recent...

http://www.agentsavant.com/as/index.cfm/2009/3/24/romantic%20suspense%20urban%20fantasy%20paranormal%20romance

in which our names appear. Cool! If *you* happen to see things like this, do feel free to let us know.

Don't know if we'll be able to get to the Nauticats cat cat show put on by the Portland area TICA group... http://www.nauticats.com/show.htm ... the show itself will be not in Portland or the Old Orchard Beach area but in Lewiston, which is about an hour closer to us...

And I'm studying BaltiCon with an eye to attending, especially if SRM can get some table space. Not sure Sharon will be able to come, alas.

And now, a round of phone calls before I launch myself toward Waterville.
kinzel: (Default)
February 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of a quirky little space opera titled Agent of Change written by a pair of quirky authors named Steve Miller (kinzel) and Sharon Lee (rolanni).

To celebrate this event, there will be a Liaden Universe® suite at Boskone -- http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/ -- and we look forward to seeing you -- yes, you! -- there to raise a cookie and toast the Clan. Note that the convention hotel has * now extended the reservation deadline* until February 8th. Act quickly ...

Note: We're also looking for help running the suite, so if you're going to be going to Boskone and would like to help, please drop a note to Steve at srmATkorval.com.

We'd like to take the opportunity of this Auspicious Event to thank all of our readers and Friends of Liad for their interest, support, encouragement and friendship over the years and across the galaxy.

You guys rock.

Sorry... the phrase "hurry up and wait" could easily have been coined for the publishing industry ...

but as seen in several places:

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are pleased to announce that our agent, Jennifer Jackson, has sold DUAINFEY, a romantic fantasy, in which a young human girl is enslaved by a Fae lord in an attempt to challenge the Fae Queen, plus a sequel, to Toni Weisskopf at Baen Books.

No word on publication dates as yet.
