I gather we (that is, Maine residents) have been beset by an influx of flatlanders who want to tell us what to do and how to do it, yet again.  This time around we've been getting visitors from the south warning that God will get us if this state lets people share their lives in certain ways.  here's a link to an article about one group: http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/104109.html -- this group brandishing the name American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property and that makes me wonder if they wish to insist that wives are still property right up there with the family chicken and milch-cow.  And do *you* think it odd that these 9 men are traveling together without supervision?  And WTF -- they've trademaked the lion on their red and gold banner? Wow!

In any case, here's what the fuss is about:  http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/bills_124th/billtexts/SP038401.asp
and everyone in the state legislature seems to want to get this voted on so they can get back to worrying about the economy.  I hope they realize that Maine -- Vacationland as it is sometimes known -- could use and welcome the economic boost of a new set of vacationers.

I expect their likes will show up in New Mexico when same-sex marriage gets on the ballot. It'll be interesting if they actually show up on my doorstep.

I was amazed how much money they spent in California to pass their anti-gay marraige bill. Then they got upset when the names and addresses of their supporters became public infomation and the boycotts and demonstrations started. I hate when someone tries to impose their 'religious' beliefs on my world. They are afraid their monopoly on marraige will cut into their collection plate. Freedom from religion sounds good right now. Best of luck dealing with these zealots and self rightious souls who want to spread their dogma where they might not be welcome.

I shake my head at the number of opponents who quote Scripture on the subject yet who don't seem to understand the concept of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion . . ."

Not to mention scriptural admonitions like "Slaves be subject to your masters."

These links sum up my viewpoint better than I could...

The issue has already reared its ugly head in Texas, and I'm very, very sorry to say that I was in the minority.

And it's very nice to be able to ignore the fuss. I don't know about you, but I've found marriage to be the most exciting, life-changing, hard-working, full-o-compromising adventure yet. Twenty-some years of it. So far. Wonder what the next twenty-some will bring?

And the fact that other people are divorcing doesn't mean that my marriage is less valid. And if runaway speedily annulled Las Vegas marriages don't make my marriage less valid, I doubt a marriage between a couple that showed twenty years of common-law-style commitment could make my marriage less valid.

The fuss comes to my face and is thus hard to avoid, if just the people with the stupid petitions standing in doorways at supermarkets and the radio ads paid for by out of state interests telling me what to think and (I don't generally watch tv so don't generally see the video versions of these things.
