I spoke to my father this evening, who assures me that though the Geek Squad operates in his neighborhood ... he's not up to the rates. Apparently the computers in house are Win 98 (an Aptiva?)and earlier (Win 3.11). I was hoping to arrange a new Linux box for him later this year but the threatened bills for my upcoming dentistry put the kibosh to that idea.

I appreciate the suggestions and volunteering of info and people -- and if someone is actually close enough and willing to assist, let me know at kinzel@korval.com and we'll arrange for phone connections so something can go forward.

Meanwhile, here it is March 9, and the current outdoor temperature is ... +2 degrees F, expecting lows around zero (0) or - maybe -2...or around -16C.... and we're looking toward:

FRIDAY:
chance of snow in the morning...then snow likely in the afternoon. Highs around 30. Chance of snow 60 percent. Lowest wind chill readings as low as 5 below in the morning.
Friday Night
Snow likely. Light snow accumulations possible. Not as cold. Chance of snow 60 percent.
Saturday and Saturday Night
Snow likely. Light snow accumulations possible. Highs around 30. Chance of snow 60 percent.

Friday is when we expect the shipment of Crystal Soldier to arrive on a big truck. Guess we'll use the sled to ferry them in from the road, 3 cases at a time.

Long day, somehow, so I'll go heat some dinner; Rolanni took the evening off after a rough day with the computer got her shoulder out of whack.

So, anyone with PHP experience and spare time out there? I have several domains I need to work on while the dentistry goes forth for the next few months....

Apparently the computers in house are Win 98 (an Aptiva?)and earlier (Win 3.11).

That could be the whole problem! Old Windows doesn't support USB, you need at least 98SE, and then it was pretty wonky and only designed around USB 1 (maybe 1.1). If he's trying it in the Windows 3.11 system, have him check the documentation, if there's not a listing for 3.11, then they don't have a driver for it and it's not going to work. I'd be doubtful on the 98 too, even if it was 98SE

I've recently spent a few wasted vacations with my SO upgrading her from 98SE to XP and then slowly replacing all the hardware. When her laptop died, I said no way and just splurged on a new one w/ all new software. Took about two hours to set up (transfer all her stuff) and then we spent the rest of the time together. Definitely worth it!

Good Luck!

OK, [livejournal.com profile] kinzel & [livejournal.com profile] rolanni I see. But [livejournal.com profile] cakmpls, [livejournal.com profile] papersky, and [livejournal.com profile] polyfrog?

I glanced at your profile just to see what the e-mail address looked like - not too weird. I assume you own neverbox.com and have lots of addresses available? And when I looked, there was this dark blue text. Those are the five people you have friended that I also have friended, and I can't quite figure out what the connection(s) is(are)? May I be nosy, please? {beg, grovel, plead?}

No, neverbox.com is owned by a fabulous free service called spamgourmet.com . I recommend checking them out -- it'd take longer for me to explain what they do than for you to go there and sign up for an account! Suffice it to say -- they keep you from getting spam. And if you do get spam, you'll know PRECISELY where it comes from, and you can turn it off at the spigot.

I have no idea what the connection is, honestly. The only one of them i know in person is [livejournal.com profile] polyfrog. [livejournal.com profile] papersky's another F/SF writer; i thought i'd found her through [livejournal.com profile] rolanni or [livejournal.com profile] kinzel, frankly. [livejournal.com profile] cakmpls is just cool. *grin*

Sorry i'm not able to shed any light . . .

Ah. I own my domain, and the box it lives on is in my office - I do my own spam filtering, etc.

Thanks for indulging my curiosity!

Yeah, i own several. *grin* I have a freelance web design/development business, and i'm also just a geek. But i still let Spamgourmet do my spam filtering, because i like the way they handle it, and it takes a lot of the load off of me. I still have a secondary filter on the mail that comes IN to my box, but SG is great for stopping it before it ever GETS there.
