OK crew --

we're working on gathering locations -- in Liaden ebooks or chapbooks or in novels -- of dictionaries, lists of names and places, reference type things .... I know this sounds simple, but I'm at the office packing again, and Sharon's home writing (did you see her list of "weird words" from Ghost Ship? ... http://rolanni.livejournal.com/526774.html ) and honestly, we have had so many editions that it *is* hard to find them all.

All help is welcome...

Thanks!

And oh yeah... we have a beautiful cold blue-sky day here. Who has my early February blizzard, anyway?

We've got your blizzard. I think we have about 20 inches so far and it's still coming down.

Um, this might be your blizzard here. Any identifying marks? Feel free to come and claim it.

In other news, if you're still on the fence about Boskone, I'm still looking fort a roommate there.

Yeah, a blizzard, -- white, lottsa wind -- beautiful ... that could be mine.

As for Boskone, I'm afraid I'm not on a fence at all -- can't afford the time away from here right now (see Saturday afternoon and I'm writing this from the office in Waterville where I'm only 10 days behind in getting orders out while Sharon's working on Ghost Ship at home)and I'm behind on a story and a chapbook that was due out last month, too ...

How can we help?

Is this for the general masses, or just them that already know the drill?
So, say I'm currently reading Crystal Dragon. What would help here, a list, similar to the Ghost Ship list, of people/places/terms? And then what, just e-mail them to you or...? Post as a response to a this LJ thread.

Could people volunteer to go through a specific book/subset of chapters/chapbook and skim out said info? That way people aren't duplicating effort.

Too bad there isn't a wiki where we could just add terms.

Actually, I was looking for existing lists rather than trying to generate new ones; we already have volunteers working on some compilations and (over the course of more than a dozen books and a bunch of chapbooks and etc) there were a number of such infolists and I wanted to make sure all were included. It turns out that we had many more of these in searchable form than we'd realized once we looked at some older back-up disks, and those files have been delivered, so I think progress goes forth... as for a public wiki, no , there isn't one yet -- that a possibility down the road, but there's a lot of potential spoiler issues -- we may solve this once the website upgrade is in gear.

"Actually, I was looking for existing lists rather than trying to generate new ones;"

There's one at the back of Pilot's Choice (Meisha Merlin) that might be able to be cannabalised...

oooo, and page 299 of the Liaden Universe Companion, Vol. 2.

Software tools

I have some stuff lieing about for my day job that can probably help with this.

If you have electronic versions of the texts, I can first scan them for any non-dictionary words, and generate small snippets showing the context in which those words are used.

Slightly harder, but still doable, is to look for apparent proper nouns on the basis of capitalization; I expect to get some false positives that will need weeding out.

Alternatively, if you have a friendly software helper, put me in touch with them, and I can discuss tools and methods with them. The actual tool that I would use is proprietary, but there are good free alternatives.
