And now, the battle of the laydown dates!

The good news is that we just got "author copies" of Fledgling the mass market:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Fledgling/Sharon-Lee/e/9781439133439/?itm=2&USRI=fledgling+steve

which is good. You can go right over to Barnes and Noble or stop at your favorite indie bookstore to pre-order ... but (sigh) we're not quite sure now *when* you can get it.

B&N says: February 23
Amazon says: March 9
Indie Bound: February 1
Powells: February
BooksAMillion: February 23
Borders: February 23

Let me note that I'm still displeased with Powell's, and have been for a dozen or more years. They have a hard time connecting my name to any of our books unless someone *insists* ... and once told me that it was "only a database problem" ... and so while I can be found as an author of the hardbound Fledgling I am not listed as an author of the mass market Fledgling. Yes, I *know* some people swear by Powell's, but you know, I'd really rather you consider Uncle Hugos, or Mysterious Galaxy, or DreamHaven or Pandemonium or Childrens Book Cellar, or Flights of Fantasy, or Borderlands, or Constellation Books, or The Missing Volume, or Larry Smith Bookseller -- all of whom have shown active support of Lee & Miller -- and The Liaden Universe over the years. In fact, in terms of Lee & Miller, Powell's seems not to be carrying Duainfey new at all (boo, hiss) -- and the Duainfey they carry is by Sharon Lee -- at least that's according to their database, but I guess it might be "only a database problem".

Speaking of "database problems", the quote I found to sell Fledgling on the Borders site this morning was:
"Description: The first new Liaden Universe novel in three years is a rousing military space adventure with larger-than-life characters . . . . . great space adventure, hard to beat for fans of fast-paced space opera ("Locus")." Sigh, so much for attention to detail!

And so on to SRM Publisher's world headquarters office and warehouse in a little while -- I got 37 packages out yesterday and hope to do more today.

Hmm, they seen to be crediting that description to Locus. The only review I can see in Locus of Fledgling says none of that. Perhaps this should be passed on to whoever is running Locus these days (Charles Brown died last year).

That's the paperback description, the hardcover one on the same site is much more reasonable: "Theo Waitley has lived all her young life on Delgado, a Safe World that is home to one of the galaxy's premier institutions of higher learning. Suddenly, though, Theo's life is about to change." I wonder why they put a different one on the paperback.

Amazon UK also have Fledgling by only Sharon Lee -- in spite of the book cover prominently saying both names! Some of the other Liaden books are under both names, so they can do it if they want. (But doing a search and then asking for the results in publication order still gets weird results often. Their database is -- and I use a technical term here -- crap.)

(I appear not to have the mass market edition of Fledgling on pre-order. I will rectify this omission, after all I only bought two copies of the hardcover and I've lent or given both of those (I also have the signed copy which is not leaving me). I like mass market format for taking on journeys, I can fit two or three into each side pocked of my backpack.)

Wait, there's a Locus review of Fledgling?

Ah, it was pointed to /by/ Locus (http://www.locusmag.com/Magazine/2009/Issue12_Bestsellers.html, #6 in hardcovers), but apparently it's not actually /in/ Locus (on IndieBound, but that is now giving me a blank page; a couple of minutes ago it was showing me the review).

Which makes it even more odd that Borders are apparently crediting Locus with that quote...

And yes, we have it on pre-order so it ought to show up early, maybe with an embargo-until-2/23 tag on the invoice.

PS Sorry about Powell's

PPS I don't understand IndieBound's Feb 1st. I'll see what I can find out tomorrow when the shop's open.

Baen doesn't usually embargo books, if I recall correctly... when you get the, sell them!

A *New* Novel?

Just contemplating... In ten years, with Ghost Ship and the rest of the Ghost Flotilla, along with Balance of Custom and the other Balance of Trade books out there, that "new" on the cover is going to feel a bit odd. Heck, even with Saltation breathing down its neck, and Mouse and Dragon soon to follow, that "new" is going to be dated fast. Not complaining, you understand, I'm really looking forward to the other books, but...

(psst? For those who wonder, the authors have made no commitment to the Ghost Flotilla or any further Balance of Trade books, but a reader can dream, right?)

Burton from Montreal

Mike are you trying to give Rolanni & Kinzel a moment of stun astonishment (or heart attack) with your prophetic proclamation of forthcoming Liadan books?

Mind you it's not a bad idea. One flaw with the recent Liadan books is the number of open ended story threads to be wrapped up.

the thing is every time we start to close a story line ... we get all these emails and blog posts about what our readers think needs to be continued.
