Mixed grill indeed ...

What was Hitler's dinnerware doing in Maine?

http://www.wcsh6.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=74402

Meanwhile, I have less than 30 items in the living room to pack and ship.
I am, however, out of some of the supplies and tomorrow is going to be a hard day to coordinate things ... so I assume the last of the actual pre-orders of Liaden Universe Companion(r) Number Two will get out Monday.

Your book is very likely in the mail if you haven't got it already, though, since yesterday we took the largest lot yet to the PO... to the tune of a whopping big postage bill... and some disgruntled fellow patrons who would prefer me not to mail when it's their day to go to the post office.

Rolanni, Mozart, and Scrabble: your living room should return Monday, too.

I got my books!

They're gorgeous! Thank you so much! I brought my softback to work to read at lunch.

My 2 copies arrived today in Ann Arbor, and I'll pass one of them on to the friend who introduced me to the books tomorrow.

BTW, I emailed you asking about how to order 3 copies of the new chapbook and haven't heard back. Did it get lost in the ether, or are you still sorting out postage costs?

Yes on the sorting of postage costs...

because what I need to do to be sure is to take a packed example of each of 1 copy, 2 copy, and 3 copy shipments and then ask the clerk to check me on a series of out of country addresses and mailing options. This would all work much better if I had an assistant conversant with the arcane bait-and-switch mailing regulations which make a Flat Rate Priority package of volume of 2.8 X and a mass of 1.97 X $4 less expensive to mail than a Priority Package of X, or an equivalent First Class Postage XFC.

The book in question is not to the printer yet; I'll try to catch up.

No rush, I just wanted to make sure the email had gotten through. Let me know (or just post here or to the FOL list) when things are sorted, and then if it ends up costing more at the last minute I can always send more via PayPal or drop it in the trip jar.

I really don't understand collectors

Why would anyone want dinnerware and a handkerchief from Hitler? I mean, I certainly wouldn't want to eat from it, and as for blowing my nose where that moustache had been - please, not while I'm alive.

The only reason I can think of for collecting this kind of stuff is so that you can wave it in front of other collectors to elicit their envy that you managed to find such a rare and odd specimen - and that is such a strange reason.

Thanks! Something for me to ponder.

We have in our living room a table that once belonged to H.L. Mencken; we use it most days and we have it because, above all else, it is a very fine table. I'm not sure if it was built and crafted for him or if he simply bought it.

That it once graced the home of the Bard of Baltimore is a wonder and and a marvel; that it was rescued from ignominy as a plant table for heedless clericals... that is the rest of the story....

The oldest thing I own... is a tektite. I don't know who it was built for, either.

But you see, those I understand. My wife's little collection of Swarovski (sp?) crystal critters and funny little mice from the place in Concord - they are cute. Old tables and desks and such are utilitarian but also beautiful, and some have history attached (such as your Mencken table). But dishes that belonged to Hitler? I'll bet they aren't even particularly attractive.

It's a bit like our recent visit to the Imperial treasures on exhibit in Nara - these are apparently national treasures, on display one week each year. But my wife looked at one of them and said, "that's just an old scrap of cloth." She was not impressed with the lineage of the displays.

Of course, we're all growing spoiled by the TV - where a scrap of cloth would be digitally remastered into a full bolt, with coloring and such restored. Somehow we expect our museum displays to conform, and are disappointed at the continuing simplicity of such relics.

A tektite - I'm sure it could tell a tale of wonder, if it were so inclined.

Thanks for your time.

Why?

Because it went "Moosing" and Maine was where they found it. ')

Relax a bit - the post office should be closed on Monday for Veteran's Day.

Book Unasked For

Dear Kinzel, please excuse me using this forum, but I am unsure where to direct my question. I happily received my LUC 2 last week and devoured it in a single night. I was disconcerted to receive another copy on Saturday. I only filled out one request form to my knowledge. I would like to return this second book to you. Please advise me as to the proper steps. Thanks!

Well ...

We had a number of purposeful and a few (we now gather) mistaken multiple orders on LUC2 and our print run was based on pre-order numbers from our database; the best bet, since I can't penetrate LJ anonymity, is to consider it a gift and find a reader who will be interested, or science fiction club needing a donation, or a librarian willing to actually add the "extra" book to their collection. You're bound to know someone who *ought* to read our stories -- please, pass it on.

PO Monday

Will your PO be open Monday? Considering that Today is Veteran's Day, and My PO is not delivering mail tomorrow, I would assume it is the same elsewhere.

Not to burst your bubble on anything. ;-)

Considering that packing needs to take place... the over-sight was a minor one and the information still holds: the signed pre-orders should be caught up today and after that we're working on regular backorders, which have also fallen behind under the deluge.

My late afternoon trip to the PO Friday *did* yield an ancient case of supplies to help get the project done.... and so that part of done is done.

Hey - this is probably a silly question but do you have any more copies of Partner's in Necessity? I'm thinking I should order a couple for gifts...
