If you know someone who is deaf, there's a study being done to understand how sign language is handled by the brain:

We are neither deaf nor in the neighborhood.

Do you know sign languages? I've been assuming that you do, from the descriptions of the various fingertalking systems. Almost half of the people I've known who are fluent in sign language haven't been hearing impaired themselves, they've mostly known people who are (one of them had two deaf parents, and learned sign before he learned to speak).

Neither one of us can be said to be fluent in any of the popular sign systems. Sharon had some formal training, since she was supervisor for a deaf printer at one point in her career; we both have worked with deaf co-workers and with deaf clients and I suspect we were both influenced by representations (or misrepresentations!) of sign language use among native Americans. Our plans to jointly attend sign classes have fallen through several times over the years.
