And so this morning I went for a walk before the weather turns too warm for comfort, and at the end of my road (we walk on the roads here, shoulders being a rocky morass and sidewalks nonexistent)I found a shiny-but-scratched penny.

Hah, I snarfed that treasure right up. Lucky penny? A sign?...

...and came home in time to hear the phone call start wherein the agency that holds our mortgage reported that our mortgage payments will go up on the order of 50%, starting in August, on account of factors including Sharon's new job. So, we will now, in 2007, be paying in monthly mortgage payments about what our rent was at Lower Gate Court in 1986.

Then the phone call came from Staples, telling me I've spent so much money at Staples... that they'll give me another 10 percent off packaging supplies as long as I keep buying from them. Locally, there's not much choice, so I guess that helps...

And we've heard from a local auto dealership... who knows we are willing to take a runs-good-but-is-not-pretty car...that they have a 10 year old Subaru sedan due in for us to look at. I'd hoped we'd be able to stay within the current decade, but we'll see what that looks like in the next week or so. Maybe it'll be pretty after all, eh?

Oh, and it looks like some of the plumbing is acting up.

Tell you true, that's some turbulent luck!

Oh, and today's outrage? Trees and people who hate them....

If you haven't already seen it, _Gun Shy_ made the daily fishwrapper. You might tell Sharon...

Today's edition -- the "Lifestyle" section, Dale McGarrigle's "Maine Bound Book Reviews", page C9 in our edition. Your mileage may vary.

And yes, Dale can get a bit glacial. Finally mentioned DRAGON'S TEETH a month or so back, 2006 release...

too bad they can't increase the property taxes based on the "improved view". It gripes me that these ... scoff-laws are getting away with it scot-free.

We had one (expletive) who thought he was permitted to wander into a park out here (MN) and lop trees that were "blocking his view". They gave him a mighty fine.
Why do so many wealthy folks act so Nouveau?

Makes you wanna chainsaw a few heads, eh? The owners don't appear to be using them...

Why is it that the utility and cable companies can come in, hack-up the trees on my street, and make it look like a GIANT MOLDY GREEN DONUT, but I can't trim them so they will be Healthy AND attractive?

You don't live in the valley of the jolly (hohoho) green giant, do you?

It does sound as though the luck is moving roughly around you at the moment.

I know views are big business in real estate, but that's really sad. Around here we've lost virtually all the Ash trees (including 2 large ones near my townhouse) to the Emerald Ash Borer (http://www.emeraldashborer.info/index.cfm). Including the ones that make up 40% of the native forest.

I just became the proud owner of a 1996 Toyota Camry (roll-up windows, very low mileage.) May it work out well for you.

I notice we all leap on the $%#@ tree hackers. A pox on their houses! And I do not understand how the mortgage can increase 50%, unless you had a balloon mortgage. Wish this was good news, and not bad, as is implied.

Perhaps you should both go outside tonight, look up and remind the universe, politely, that you are Korval, and The Luck should be arriving right about now with multiple travel bags and a dueling revolver...

Cars are useful if expensive; where we are they are often more than useful... they are required. We've had decent luck with older vehicles over the years, as well as a few dogs, so we'll watch carefully. The plan at the moment is to get a car that'll put on...say 7000 to 9000 miles a year, which is sort of minimal living where we do. Call it our run-about.

The whole mortgage didn't go up 50% .. .the current mortgage payments went up around 50%, thanks to a Rural Housing Administration adjustable rate plan. We knew they'd be rising over time it is just very inconvenient that they chose *this* time to review and raise.

And... I go out on the deck almost every might of the year and look at the sky (rain, snow, moon, or moonless...) what I *really* see there, or what I say to the sky or what it says back I don't much talk about.

As long as you got a dialog going. Hope it helps.

Because I live near the water, we've had a rash of people poisoning trees to improve their water views... in our area, you need a permit to do anything to native flora and our local council is very strict. If they find lopped or poisoned trees, they erect very sturdy banners in place of the lopping saying "these trees were poisoned to improve the view". Should I send Seattle's councils a copy of the regulations from here in the hope that it will inspire them to act before it's too late?
