Sigh, I love technology... which means I think the information below was also sent to a usenet group, so this may be a duplicate for some of you, if the other post worked, which I can't tell yet.

At the risk of tooting own horn,

Sharon Lee and I will be taking part in an online radio round-table discussion this Saturday about the "storyteller's bowl" approach to selling fiction (as it's been amended of late). If conditions permit, Diane Duane will also be taking part from Ireland. (Saturday, December 16th, starting at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern, 8 p.m. Universal Time.)

some of the background is here:

You ask "Why are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller taking part?" Because we've decided to serialize the rough draft of a new book -- _Fledgling_, a Liaden Universe novel not quite started yet -- online, at up to one chapter a week, depending on incoming donations. We announced it to a small group last week; I gather it's drawn some discussion elsewhere on usenet.

We're now committed to post at least 8 or 9 chapters, with the first one being free on January 22nd and the rest becoming available at a rate not to exceed one a week after that.

I expect the final length of the book to be between 30 and 40 chapters, with new chapter postings depending on accumulation of $300 in donations (we get to take off weeks we're traveling to conventions and the like).

(More specific details of our project at http://www.korval.com/fledgling/ if you're interested...)

I note that Sharon tried something like this on a much smaller scale in 2000; since then Lawrence Watt-Evans, Don Sakers, Diane Duane, and others have worked on similar approaches. I think the concept has value but it has risks, not the least of which is what kind of ego-bruise happens if you declare a story and no one contributes? This is a real "live without a net" situation!

Come listen in or take part and we'll all see what happens.

Steve

I don't think you and Sharon need too worry to much about ego-bruising at this point, given that Fledgling is now funded through chapter 8, and the first chapter hasn't even been posted yet.

I'll likely be busy Saturday, but I'll try to at least catch the podcast later.
