We just got the news from the NESFA list... Bob Tucker has died.

Now, once upon a time Bob Tucker helped get me through a weekend... a very difficult weekend at a convention where a member of the con committee "forgot" a promise to pay for my room and meals. I was pretty new to fandom and pretty new to prodom at the time; but someone mentioned my plight to Bob, and Bob helped make sure I got some meals, and I think it was a word from him that got me to trade in my bus ticket home for cash to live on at the con while someone was rustled up to give me a "little lift home"... that was a lift from deep in the midwest
to Owings Mills, Md. He gave me a respect for the community that is fandom and science fiction at a time when I could easily have given up on the lot.

Oh yeah, he also gave me a deep respect for the power and awe that is Jim Beam*... I spoke to him once or twice after that, but and found that thanks were things he accepted quietly, once. I learned a lot that weekend...

Please go to the SFWA Website .... for more ...

*Smooooth.....

I won't hear him lead a room in a toast with Jim Beam any more, but I certainly won't forget his voice leading the chorus!

*Smooth is properly expressed with Jim Beam in hand...
see this excellent fannish dictionary for details...

I will probably never forget his "Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats", even if I've never seen it in paperback. That and the totally different "Ice and Iron".
