Many years ago, we lost one of two dogs. Daisy was definitely the alpha dog and Harriet would always wait for her to finish eating before having her own dinner. She continued to wait after Daisy's death until hunger would overtake her. I think did that every night for a month. Our animals are really much more attached than you think.

When we lost MacGyver last summer, I let the other cats see the body and smell it before I took him to be cremated. They didn't seem to spend much time looking for him after he was gone. Of course, they are older and perhaps a bit more mature than Dulsey.
