what it takes to be removed
A "remove" is a generation. For example, my mother's first cousins are my first cousins, once removed.

Various consanguinity charts exist, but this one (http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/1769/) has a great explanation for quick-and-dirty calculation of degree and removes (at the bottom), as well as a chart layout that's easily extended.

The thing to remember when using the charts is to go all the way back to the common ancestor as the reference point - not any uncles, aunts, or cousins.
