I went to DragonCon a couple of years ago, and boy! what a scene! It had the kind of young, chaotic energy that WorldCons used to have 20 years ago, and don't anymore. It's definitely a window on a whole different slice of fandom than you'd find at a Boskone these days. Good luck!
