I see I'm on a military SF panel (hhmmmm well, I guess I can read up on the topic, since it's not my line. I may write about soldiers from time to time, but not really about the military).... Oh, a winner! Rolanni and I will be on a panel moderated by David Coe (that's good) about Corruption of the Hero

If I were able to attend that Con, I'd enjoy an insight into the point of view of an author who sometimes writes about soldiers, but doesn't particularly feel the need to write about "the military". It would be interesting to hear about the distinction -- and why soldiers are relevant to what you're trying to do, but "the military" isn't. (It might even tie into "corruption of the hero", whatever that is.)

It seems to me that some of Nelirikk's reflections on what it's like to serve under Captain Miri Robertson do tend toward a view (and auctorial use) of "the military" that one might find in something by Drake or Ringo. Drake or Ringo would be telling a different sort of story, but the military culture and mindset would be recognizably the same in all three -- including the tacit approval of various values, behaviors, and aesthetic criteria.

...or so it seems to me, YMMV, void where prohibited, etc.
