I wonder if your border guard went to the same school as the one I had at Port Huron (Michigan-Ontario, north of Detroit/Windsor) once.
My husband and I were on our way back from FKO (http://www.filkontario.ca), a Filk convention in the Toronto area. When she asked "Why were you in Canada", I replied, "We were going to a convention." Her eyes lit up, and she pounced. "You were going to a convention? What did you do instead?" I heroically (and sensibly) resisted the urge to roll my eyes, and replied, "When we entered Canada, we were going to a convention. We went to the convention. Now the convention is over and we're going home." She deflated and let us pass.
(This was also the trip where I observed that the Canadian border guards had a CCTV system that put the vehicle's rear license plate on a screen in the guard booth. The American border guards had kids from the National Guard (complete with fatigues and weapons) who trotted around the car and bellowed the state and number on your license plate to the guard. <shakes head>)
