Steve, try an NEC MobilePro 900c. Ebay is selling them for a song, they have slots for wireless cards, wide keyboards, nice screens and still fit in a small briefcase.
I own a MobilePro 800 (and am thinking of getting an 880).
Of course, they run WinCE, but some clever folks have figured out how to turn then into Linux machines.
