Brief notes:

it is snowing and has been since about 6 AM. I see the male cardinal when I peer out the window. He's looking like a Christmas card perched on a branch that has a line of snow on top of it; the female was at the feeder moments ago. If I read the various forecasts right we're looking for about 9 inches of snow all told... at the horrific rate of about three inches a day... sigh. Much better than nothing, but I may have the plow guy make me a big pile somewhere in case the weather fails.

Bummed out I am. I was hoping to see either the Ravens or Philadelphia in the Superbowl. Well, that clears some time for me to get into Second Life over the next month, doesn't it? If you get on Second Life for the first time and tell them that Elan Neruda sent you... and then join up... I get a few bonus points to help with the Lee & Miller/ SRM Publisher presence in-world. Once the Baen ebooks are for sale we'll have some SL links from our spots for folks to visit the Baen website as well. If you visit Second Life, use search to look for Friends of Liad, Friends of Liad Park, SRM Publisher, and Science Fiction Rangers....

Breakfast this snowy morning... couldn't resist... buttermilk biscuits and gravy.

I love my wooden utensils. Just thought I'd mention that.

This just in: news that Fledgling, as of this morning, has a total of 170 individual donations, ranging from $2 to over $100. Gang, you've astounded us. We have work through May 7, so far... or going on 16 weeks.

The plow truck came by a moment ago, scattering doves and chickadees and flinging sand all about every which way. At the end of the road there's a pile of sand I intend to mine next year... as soon as I get a wheel barrow. It'll be good exercise -- pushing the barrow about a quarter mile round trip, plus sand. The sand has been building up for about four years now, I guess, so I better do it before the town wastes money cleaning it up after they spent money laying it down.

So, pasta with a red sauce seems indicated for dinner. Rotini, yeah, that's the ticket. With extra garlic. Hmmm.. is there really a condition known as extra garlic? Is there ever exactly enough?

Extra garlic

That is the stuff you wear around your neck to keep the vampires off. If you aren't eating it, it's extra.

Yes. I've had pasta with too much garlic in the (white) sauce. Once. I counted out five cloves in a one serving dish.

For a pot of red sauce, if I was wanting extra garlic, I'd stop at three cloves, my own self. imho, however, it's the hot bread that really makes spaghetti really special.

There can be no such thing as too much garlic. Extra, yes, that's the stuff we haven't used yet...

Next time y'all are in the Bay Area, remind me to take you to The Stinking Rose (http://thestinkingrose.com/iindex.html) =)

Is there one up there too? We went on the way to see Le Miz at the OC Performing Arts - somewhere south of Hollywood it was, I think, I wasn't driving. It was really, REALLY good and HORRIBLY expensive. The garlic ice cream was...odd. That was the yera that Kuni was starting to have Celiac so got some reaction that made the rest of the drive not so good, but she recovered in time to enjoy the musical (her birthday present). sigh, Memories.

I'm sorry your teams didn't win - I expect to start cheering for Philly soon now - but I'm happy for my boy Matt. Matt Cassell was the quarterback of our football team and the captain of the baseball team and led both teams to huge state victories Back In The Day. Plus, he's just a real sweet boy. He and his receiver, Manny White, ended up getting picked by USC and UCLA, respectively. That was weird, turning the best partners into rivals! Good thing they both played offense, they never had to try to hit each other!

Then Matt Leinart made it impossible for Matt Cassell to get any play time by playing an EXTRA year - yes, I'm bitter. He should have just gone pro and gotten it over with, given the younger guys a chance! Anyway, when he announced that decision, Matt Cassell went to the pro draft pool and got picked by New England. He still doesn't get to play much, but he's learning from THREE Heisman holders, so I don't think he's too unhappy.

I haven't been able to find any information lately on Manny, though. I know he went to a Washington team - but I think it might have been DC, not the state, because I couldn't find him in the rosters. He may have given up on football, I don't know. But he was a good boy, a fine example to the other students at Chatsworth, and the Matt were great friends. In a city where a white boy and a black being friends can have consequences. They didn't care.

So, God bless my boys, and the teams they are playing with!

Heavens! That was long! Sorry!
