Season closing quickly

We're looking at two of the lily variety this morning... and I think I counted 5 buds again. One is so tiny I don't know if we can possibly get a flower from it...

I got buzzed repeatedly by the humming birds as I was checking out the flowers. Anyone know what the end of hummer-season is in Maine? It must take them quite some time to travel south...

Yet another warning for readers: the hardback of Liaden Universe(R) Companion is just about sold -out. I think we're down to under 40. We'll be closing pre-orders online in two days. This hardback is a bittersweet success of sorts. Looks like I should have been brave and ordered 500 of the things. The trade paper is doing OK and will be around at least to Christmas if not til next Christmas.

Anyhow, a damp and cloudy morning, windless, with lots of crickets, clouds with a hint of darkness to them like they're building toward rain. This would be in keeping with the weather yesterday which went from cloudy to flawless blue -- and then included a line of storms that swept through at about 30 miles an hour, with wonderful roiling, almost *rolling* clouds and quick hard rain.

More later -- got a lot doing today.

Wife probably has records on hummingbird departure for the nature center, which should be close to your schedule. She'll check, but you may remain in suspense until the weekend....

Thanks Jim! Did you guys get that line of squalls yesterday?

humming bird season

The male humming birds have left North Carolina -maybe 3 or 4 days ago. The females & juveniles are feeding as hard as they can and should leave here in about a week and a half to two weeks. Do the southeastern hummers leave before the northeast hummers?

Not squalls as such. We got off-and-on rain all day, enough that I didn't even try for a local bike ride, and then got a spell of fairly serious rain around dusk. Not much wind, no thunder. Moon shining by the time I went to bed.

Tell Sharon thanks for the bookstore info. I've pretty much decided to do a local Borders signing, see if they can get their act together _this_ time, and nothing else. If you guys ever want to set up a joint signing, like at the Belfast store she mentioned, I'm game. You'll draw more customers than I will....

Well...

I had hummers this morning and I think this afternoon. We'll watch closely since I don't want to starve anyone by taking the feeder in too soon -- but I also don't want to have the feeder get too much unneeded attention from the 'coons if I came help it.

Hello, you don't know me, but I am a new Liaden addict. I have finished the "Agent of Change sequence" and Balance of trade. But I am distessed that your website recommends the reading order that it does. I disagree with the Friends of Liad suggestion: I think Local Custom and Scout's Progress should definitely be read before the others. If I'd read Agent of Change or Conflict of Honors first, I would have known way too much about the future of the characters, and that would have spoiled much of my enjoyment.
I say:
Local Custom
Scout's Progress
Conflict of Honors
Agent of Change
Carpe Diem
Plan B
I Dare

Keep writing!
