Have been reading my copy of Fledgling at work. I am enjoying some of the changes, and noticing things that seemed unremarkable in the draft.
For instance... Kamele is Sub-Chair of History of Education. Not History. Not Education. History of Education. One wonders if this was chosen because of how inward-looking Academia on Delgado has become. Since this is a department in and of itself, one can only conclude that the total faculty must be huge.
And while Delgado is a Safe World, it would seem that Melchiza is a Controlled World.
And one is left wondering why it is that Pilots seem to be somewhat obsessed with personal survival. The point is made several times that certain places and societies value Pilots. This implies that there are societies that do not, and that there are specific places where Pilots are endangered. Is it just that it is a dangerous world, or is someone out to get you?
