Geography, window astronomy, and other short notes

What can I say? Woke up this morning and it was snowing. Cool. 14 degrees F cool, in fact, and snowing large fluffy flakes at 5:40 AM it was. Still is snowing, though flake size is smaller. Almost a "normal" winter so far!

Meanwhile, I woke several nights ago and while checking out a noise (furnace noise and not some cat adventure as it turned out) I glanced out the kitchen window. My neighbors lights were out, and the stars were fierce.

And, then with a naked eye glance... I saw comet Holmes through that window at 2:05 AM, up high. Had to look way up to see it all.

That's a huge thing and .. compelling. I watched it for a couple minutes. Awe inspiring in the dark Maine sky. Then my toes got cold and I went back to bed, moving the coon at so I could have 1/2 of my pillow, at least.
